Recommend me a killer sounding acoustic for a good price. (used)

This summer i'm rarely at home, and don't get to spend much time playing guitar. I need a good acoustic guitar to be a companion. I'll take it with me pretty much everywhere... here are my requirements. (not too many)

- has to be all solid wood
- sounds great (of course)
- preferably a cutaway
- $200-300 price range

so what do you think?

martin d-15, though for that price itd be tough

everything ive tried from washburn in that price range sounded killer, and fender puts out some nice stuff there also (that price new)

alvarez also, find some used, or new, they rock

Well, I was going to suggest an Ovation Celebrity, but you wanted all wood. I picked up my Ovation about 15 years ago at a dirt cheap price, it's rugged, I've taken it everywhere and beat the hell out of it and it still sounds great. In fact, (and I'm sure there will be people that disagree with me) I think Ovation guitars sound the way acoustic guitars should sound. Full range, not overly heavy in any frequencies, etc. The shallow bowl ones are another story and are okay if you're amping them, but the medium and deep bowl guitars are the ones that I like. Wood, huh? Takamine or Sigma or Washburn entry levels are pretty nice instruments.

bro, this is tulsa oklahoma. we have guitar house :) i've heard all about guitar center tho... i want to go there sometime if i ever go on vacation.

thanks guys, keep 'em comin. i also need to keep in mind the guitar needs to be pretty tough, 'cause i't be with me pretty much everywhere. also, is it a bad idea to have an acoustic around a lake because of the humidity?

Re: Recommend me a killer sounding acoustic for a good price. (used)

u think u got humidity , then be glad u dont live in houston weather, we get 100 percent humidity alot of times plus temperatures over 100 as a friendly add on

Re: Recommend me a killer sounding acoustic for a good price. (used)

the humidity wont be good, but it wont kill it

get a hard case, get the proper thing to put in (humidifier, or dryer upper, depending) and leave it in the case as much as possible

A friend of mine has an Ibanez acoustic that plays very nicely for the price. He paid about equiv. to your $160 at the time, used.

What about Seagull? I've only played a couple, but they were reasonable for the price (I think this was the brand anyway).

Re: Recommend me a killer sounding acoustic for a good price. (used)

what about seagull - canadian brand

they seem good and not too expensive
i also know mikael from opeth used them for a while

I have one so perhaps im biased, but it feels and sounds like a lot more expensive guitar than what i payed for it, very easy neck and action to play on aswell, seeing as i was going from electric to acoustic i wanted something that would be easy to play.

i'm thinking about buying this guitar and putting a new bone saddle on it. what do you think? i'm waiting on him to email me back with more info, the pictures aren't that great. i'm almost positive it's a solid top, because the newer ones like that are. solid wood guitars sound better over the years... does anyone know anything about those guitars?

Re: Recommend me a killer sounding acoustic for a good price. (used)

seagull gets my vote.

then again if you can spare additional $s, taylor 4xx's are my fav. I personally prefer the grand orchestra body.

The Samick Gregg Bennet stuff fits your criteria. I have a D 8-CE
It has a solid Cedar top and Rosewood back and sides. It's a cut away
w/t a fishman preamp and it sounds and plays pretty damm good for
a guitar in the $300 price range.

Re: Recommend me a killer sounding acoustic for a good price. (used)

you could probably find a decent takamine for that price if you looked hard...

never played one that didn't sound good at any price range....

Re: Recommend me a killer sounding acoustic for a good price. (used)

Killer sound and 200 to 300 at the same time are not going to happen. Be realistic If you want a guitar that sounds good and is solid wood construction it will cost 500. and up. If you want a guitar that is road worthy consider laminated back and sides with a solid top. The laminated back and sides will hold up better in variable weather conditions. Consider a Yamaha, they are very sound guitars. They play well and are reasonable @ about 250. But as far as Killer sound goes they dont have it, but nothing in this price range does! IF you can go up to about 500. get a Guild. Guild guitars are one of the most underrated guitars out there. The sound great, the are well made, and are extremly dependable.

The Taylor Big Baby is pretty close to $300 if I remember correctly. They sound great and seem pretty durable.

Re: Recommend me a killer sounding acoustic for a good price. (used)

ooooh, man, if you can find a D-15 for that price (or approx) you'd be quite a lucky guy! That's easily the nicest sounding acoustic, to my taste anyway, I've ever picked up.

I wanna +1 for the Ibanez acoustics too. They were a bit bright sounding I've found, but they feel and play like really solid instruments. You know that feeling you get when you pick up an acoustic and it just feels floppity and flimsy? You won't find that with the Ibanezes... "artwood" was the model I think, if I remember correctly.

Re: Recommend me a killer sounding acoustic for a good price. (used)

thanks a lot guys. i think i'm going to buy that guitar on ebay.... i talked to the guy and he didn't no much about guitar. i told him to look at the soundhole and see if it was ply or solid, and he said it was solid. i believe him because other gutiars like that one are... i think it's a really good deal if i can get it for really cheap. if i don't liek it, i'll just fix the saddle and sell it with a better description and more information. i win both ways :)
