Recommend Me an H-S-H setup...

Some of you may have read that I am jonesing for an Ibanez Universe. Well, If something happens and I can't get that guitar, I want to seriously mod my OLP MM1, as it's all I have. Let's pretend the MM1 is all I have and there is no other guitar on my horizon (parish the thought....). Right now, it is sitting here with a DiMarzio PAF Pro in the neck and a Fred in the bridge. I want to go with a really cool setup for Fusion ala Allan Holdsworth. So, i need something smooth warm and will get out there when I need it. I will have my luthier put a route in the guitar for a single coil in the middle position.

The Tone Wizard says:
Bridge 1 SH-10 Full Shred
Bridge 2 SH-5 Duncan Custom
Neck 1 SH-2N Jazz Model
Neck 2 SH-1N '59 Model
Middle 1 STK-S1 Classic Stack
Middle 2 SSL-2 Vintage Flat

I do like the Custom in the bridge but I think it might be a little too aggressive.

What are y'alls thoughts?

Re: Recommend Me an H-S-H setup...

I have a couple of ideas. I think a Jazz in the neck is a must for clarity. For the smooth and warm part, with enough heat when you want it, I'd go for the Custom Custom. The Classic Stack Plus in the middle for exceptional noiseless single coil tone.

The other thing I would say is if you want something warmer than the Jazz in the neck ( and clarity is not an issue), the AIIPro would be my choice.

What about trying some of BachtoRock's hybrids in the neck and bridge positions? Many of the forum bro's have been raving about them.

BTW Butch, what ever happened to the Tele plan?

Nice ideas... I'm kind of burnt out on Teles to be honest...

PGb/Classic Stack/CC. Install a pair of push/pulls for series parallel switching on the neck and bridge for better notch tones.

Re: Recommend Me an H-S-H setup...

Parallel Axis 1 or 3 for bridge.

Quarter Pound Tapped.

Alnico II Pro neck.

One push/pull to split the 2 humbuckers and tap the middle single.

Re: Recommend Me an H-S-H setup...

Gripweeds set sounds nice, but I'll pose some alternatives.

I'd like to think that getting a "set" is somehow more of a sure thing
than mixing and matching, so for the HBs, a Full Shred set looks
pretty good. Search around for some good reviews, particularly
the neck.

A PATB-1 set might be good if the guitar is brighter, or, of course,
the APH and CC.

For the middle, I would go with a real single coil. The first and
safest choice would be APS-2, which will give the '3' position
some excellent strattish sound, which could come in handy if you
also like Scott Henderson. Two other choices would be a lipstick
tube (!) which would look great and should have excellent quack
capability, or a twangbanger (!).

What are your controls? If you want a simple setup, then the
Ibanez type five way switching with auto-coil-cutting in the
2 and 4 positions is really nice and will be very quiet with the
middle pickup RW/RP. If you currently don't have a switch slot,
then the same wiring can be done with a five way rotary. A six
way rotary gives you that plus the two HB in parallel tone, which
covers just about everything.

You could set up the auto-cutting AND use push/pulls for coil
cutting the two HB, etc...

re Holdsworth tone, I've just been listenning to him and watching
his videos. He uses guitars with almost no wood, so they must be
on the bright side. His tone, more than some others, seems to
be the whole package from his fingers, his picking hand, his
vibrato and vibrato bar technique to the distortion, delay, speaker
choices etc. Scott Henderson often has a lot more of the guitar
tone sneaking through.

good luck and have fun...

Re: Recommend Me an H-S-H setup...

Hi Butch,

One combo I can think of is this:
Pearly Gates+ (with an A5 magnet) in the neck;
SSL-6 Custom Flat in the middle;
Custom 5 in the bridge.

I actually had this combo in an all-mahogany Strat-style guitar with a Floyd Rose trem and it sounded really good: some nice treble (though the guitar is not really trebly in itself), not too many thick mids, and nice tight bass.

One warning though - the SSL-6 is quite powerful, so I adjusted it really low for more balance. But I liked the results a lot.

My PRS Swamp Ash Special is loaded with;

Custom 5 - bridge
Vintage Rail - middle
Jazz - neck

Two volumes, one is a push pull to tap 'buckers & add the VR while a regular 3-way toggle rounds it out.

It's a do-it-all axe that leans towards the rockier/pop side of the spectrum.

Nothin' but love for that one.

Alnico II Pro across the board. If want it brighter then 59's and a Vintage flat
