Recording King Guitars – Thoughts?

So I'm looking for a cheap practice guitar so I don't wear out my Martin on basic every day practicing stuff. Played a Recording King Dirty Thirties Single O last night that sounded way too good for the price.

Thoughts of these? Was also looked at some Wasbhurn Parlors (R series stuff)

I have seen some bad reviews for the Recording King
I opted for a Yamaha when preserving my Martin
Similar feel and quality instruments

On a side note
GC currently has a sale on Martin X series dreadnaught and parlor (000) sizes $499

Thanks for the heads up, this guitar seems to have solid reviews for the Single O.

I've definitely played some nice Yamahas!

Re: Recording King Guitars – Thoughts?

what are you saving your Martin for?

I only ask because I end up doing a similar thing. I play my beater mostly fake wood Martin a lot and then rarely take out my HD28. That's mostly cause I have little kids who will immediately steal the pick out of my hand and bang on the guitar like a drum once I start playing.

If that wasn't the case I'd play that HD28 nonstop. What's your rationale?

Saving my Martin for practicing full songs and performances/recordings.

I'm looking for something that sounds and plays decently to practice alternate tunings, have around a camp fire, take on trips, etc.

Pawnshop
:D

Unfortunately, the Pawn Shops around me are asking higher prices than eBay or Reverb...I understand they have to pay bills and whatnot but when you have beat up crap for more than like-new prices...no thanks.

Yikes...

"When" I have ca$h in hand,I usually start at about 1/2 of what they have on the tag, generally haggle to about 2/3rds.
So 30ish% off..

Happy 'Coustic Hunting!
:)

Def an aquired skill,helps if you're a "regular",too...

Don't hate the player, hate the game.
Or own it,I've done pretty well when I was buying, but they kinda knew me.

Again,'Grats on teh Martin & Good Luck,I'm sure you'll come up w/ something cool!

Thanks man! Just wanted something that I will enjoy playing but won't be afraid to get hurt or stolen.

Ha! My view of buying things is "I have money" not haggling ;) (1:12 mark on the video)

Go to Music Go Round and spend $150 on an Alvarez, Yamaha, or Ibanez. Even the $299 new Ibanez acoustics aren't awful.

I've played a few Recording King Lap Steels and came away unimpressed. They sounded flat, the tuning pegs were terrible, and the electronics were weak.

It's funny, this Ibanez Parlor at the GC was absolutely horrible...no sustain, awful tone and super high action.

Not a fan of the cheaper Alvarez I've played (really any that I've played.) But I'm definitely open to trying something!

Haven't tried any of their lap steels, definitely won't look at RK for those!

Re: Recording King Guitars – Thoughts?

Recording Kings get great reviews on the Acoustic Guitar Forum, and those guys know their stuff. Basically you are getting full wood construction for the price that the other ones are composite, right?

I will say, I'm super inspired when I play my Martin, it sounds so good I just keep playing.... I don't feel that way with plinky acoustics. Plus, solid wood acoustics sound better and better the more you play them. Eventually you'll need a refret and long, long term you'll need a neck reset, but you've played and enjoyed your guitar that whole time.

Have you checked out any Sigmas? My dad bought an older Korean one last year, and it's pretty nice. His nice acoustic is a 50's Gibson SJ. I won't say anything stupid like the Sigma is as good as the Gibson, but it's not garbage by comparison, either.

Wasn't Sigma the Martin "Squire" Or "Epi" line?

Basically, yes. Closer to the MIJ Fender/Squier.

I have a RD-227 Dreadnaught, all solid rosewood back and sides, Sitka spruce top,
Ebony board and bridge with bone nut and saddle. It is an amazing guitar for the price
and in the 5 years I've had has only improved in all it's attributes. This was their top of
range dread at the time and IIRC I stole it for $500 AUD second hand with a case, about $1300 retail.

I also have an RM-991 round neck Tri-Cone Resonator, again bought second hand for $350 with a case.
I don't know too much about resonators but it sounds grat and is sh!!tload of fun to play.

Their higher end stuff is fantastic value in the sub $1500 range and easily competes with other guitars
twice or even greater the price. I only ever buy used guitars and at the sweet prices I paid for the two
I am an extremely lucky bastard to own them and would not replace them unless I won the lottery.

Katoh is another brand to look out for if you are chasing Classical or Flamenco guitars
and Cort's Parkwood series of steel string acoustics, all with solid timber constructions.
