Recording off my amp?

Is there a safe way to connect my amplifier output to my Tascam recorder? Have searched the net and saw some references to DI boxes, or should I just buy a good mic and record from the speakers?

If I need to mic the amp, what mic would you recommend?

Peavey at one time made a little unit that took the plug going to your speaker, and sent one signal to the speaker, and a line level of that signal to a board. Can't remember the name, just that peavey made it.

THD Hot Plate (available in various impedance ratings), Marshall Power Brake, Palmer, Studiomaster, blah, blah.

+1 on the Shure SM57. Aim it towards the loudspeaker, just short of the grille. For more room ambience, place the mic further away from the amp. (Or use two mics.) Some engineers swear by ribbon mics. For budget home recording, this is probably too much expense.

Finally, have you checked the rear of your amp for a Balanced Line Out socket? Ideally, this should be frequency compensated.

Combining all of these options should give a professional guitar tone in your recordings.

Some amps have have a line out. With that you should be able to go right to the recording system

If you're going the software route, Recabinet is the best I've tried, but you'd still need to run your amp's speaker or a load box...
