Recording Question

i know this guy who says he will record my bands demo for free becasue he wants to work on his producing...yes we're only 16 but thats besides the point. he told me that he has a Mackie 16 track mixer, a Layla Computer Interface and then Cool Tracks. is this a decent set up. i realize it's not gonna sound like a studio, but for aour 1st 3 song demp i think it's be okay. i have very little recording experience, is this set up anygood? besides his equipment i am worried about the bands stuff. i am playing with a Peavey XXL 1/2 stack which sounds pretty damn good to my ears i am also using a stock ESP LTD F200. my bassist is using a pretty decent setup, and the drums are decent too. waht i am worried about is my rhythm guitarist. he has good guitars (brian moore i2, ESP LTD F200) BUT he is running it through a Behringer GX210 and a Boss Metal Zone. our tones are really different. his is very brittle and mine is fuller. is this gonna b a major issue while recording?

Re: Recording Question

You have access to free studio time, take it and run.

I am guessing you haven't a whole lot of time in a studio, and this project will teach you more than you can imagine, regardless of the quality of recording you come out of there with.

As for your other guitarists tone, I have been in 3 different bands with 2 guitarists. It actually HELPS if the two players have distinctive sounds. The less you cross each others path in terms of tone and E.Q., the clearer each players track will be at mix time. I think the worst thing you could do is have 2 guitarists that used the same equipment... or tried to have the same sound.

As for the gear he has, it ain't the equipment, it's the engineer running it,and the skill of the band being recorded. I have heard 4-track portastudio tapes that sounded better than 16 track digital with all the bells and whistles.

Anywho, good luck and have fun!

Re: Recording Question

we are deff. taking the recording time, it's not exactly a studio, basiaclly i know this guy who's parents buy him anything he wants. so he has the equipment i mentioned and it's in his basement. i wanted to know if it's good equipment to record through, either way we're gonna do it, i just wanna know what to expect.

you need different tones! most of the people i play with scoop their mids, and i don't very much. their tones are piercingly bright, mine are fat and bassy.

anyways, as for the gear the recorder dude has, everything is acceptable. could have better interface hardware, but not every kid goes and blows $2000 on Mark Of The Unicorn stuff :p

Re: Recording Question

If worse comes to worse, you could re-record his tracks with him playing through your amp (EQ'd differently of course).

Re: Recording Question

i think the only problem i have with his tone is that, i play most of the lead parts and his sounds very much like a lead sound rather than the rhythm sound. my amp i am able to get the bass end but also able to get the treble and stuff so it sounds like we're playing with 1 and 1/2 guitars because his tone is only 1/2 way there but i do think the different tones sounds better, i jsut didn't think that his tone was different, but rather bad lol

Re: Recording Question

Yeah, go for it dude, it's pretty decent gear. The preamps in the Mackie mixer are a pretty high standard normally, so going through there into the Layla should give a pretty good overall signal.

After that, it's up to the user really.
