Recording questions: from mic to pc

Hey everyone,

So after selling my HD147 and getting a Splawn I am entering a whole different realm of recording. Currently I have an sm57 that, through some converters, runs into the mic input of my laptop. It works fine but I feel like I don't do the Splawn justice when I try recording. There's not as much bass and it generally doesn't sound as big as it should.

I was thinking the issue might be the connection from my mic to my pc. Would getting a decent audio interface dramatically help the sound quality of my recordings? I was looking at something like this:

What do you guys think? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

That will work, but I'd look into the M-Box, or MOTU's new smaller, cheaper (than their other units) box.

thanks for the info man. yea i'm trying not to spend too much money.

do you know if there's a big sound quality difference b/t usb and firewire interafaces? thanks!

Naw, shouldn't be at all. USB 2.0 and Firewire will perform the same for audio applications. It's when you're transfering data and files that firewire is faster.
