Replacement Pickguard Ideas.

My girlfriend is thinking about getting me a new pickguard for my SG Standard for valentines day. It's the current type of SG Standard, large batwing-style pickguard, dual humbuckers both black uncovered, chrome hardware, nice white pearly inlays (not the fugly green stuff on lp classics), cream neck binding. The guitar looked beautiful with the stock chrome covered pickups, but they sounded bad and I've got black uncovered duncan pickups in there now which doesn't look as nice with the black 5ply pickguard on there now. Any Ideas? I've been thinking 5 ply white or white pearloid, but would appreciate any input. I'm not afraid to try something different.

No pictures of mine, but its basically this with uncovered black pickups.

Re: Replacement Pickguard Ideas.

I've thought about black pearl, its definitely something I'll consider because I'm thinking the white pearl wont look good without gold hardware, while the black pearl would look pretty badass with black pickups and chrome hardware. Any other sites that I should look at? Does anyone have any good or bad past dealings with Terrapin?

Re: Replacement Pickguard Ideas.

Is it the black one in your avatar? Then chrome mirror like Glen Tipton!

I think white pearl would look gaudy. To me it would be like taking a sharp black tuxedo and trading it in for a Liberace suit. Black pearl could look nice, though.

Yeah I'm pretty certain white pearl is out, although it looked alright on those dark blue SG's with gold hardware from the 90's (don't remember what model) I really don't think it would suit this one...

Black Pearl or 5-Ply White?!

Re: Replacement Pickguard Ideas.

You can also get some chrome pickup covers. I am a huge fan of www.guitarpartsresource.com, though it isn't necessarily the cheapest I've seen in most cases.
Black pearl would look pretty badass. Chrome mirror could be good too. Plain white might be an okay way to go, but it might also look kind of barren. If you can't see the grain on the guitar especially, veneer could look relatively classy, but you'd have to cut it yourself, or get it cut by a third party. www.joewoodworker.com/catalog/ was recommended to me. It's sold 1/42" thick, which is something like .6mm, I think.

Plenty of good looking stuff out there.

I think AxeGuardz are the best.

Yeah AXEGUARDZ! I swear by them! Order one today! wwwwww.axeguardificationsolutions.com.cn! Jimmy Page uses them, shouldn't you?

Dear friend. I have to move all this gold bullion out of Nigeria. Won't you help? There will be axeguardz in it for you if you do!

Re: Replacement Pickguard Ideas.

I hate to ruin the Axeguardz party here, but I didn't see any SG pickguards on the site, and I really don't need electronic shielding on this pickguard.

Re: Replacement Pickguard Ideas.

You really ought to consider buying one anyway. I bolted 20 of them on my Marshall Silver Jubilee and it increased harmonic peformance an incredible two thousand percent.

Re: Replacement Pickguard Ideas.

This is what it would look like with the white pickguard, unfortunately that site didn't have any black pearl images, and doesn't have a DIY section for the pickguard like the other guitars on the site do.

Re: Replacement Pickguard Ideas.

I think single ply white would look really sweet. The pearl is more of a fender thing for me, you know? The plain white is very classy.

Re: Replacement Pickguard Ideas.

My vote still goes to veneer. Especially if you can match it to the neck. White's not bad, though.

Re: Replacement Pickguard Ideas.

I think black pearloid is my choice, too, although tortoiseshell is a nice thought. It looks nice on a black guitar.
