Replacement pickups for PRS SE Torero - Doom metal with string definition.

Re: Replacement pickups for PRS SE Torero - Doom metal with string definition.

Not sure about the Dime. It may work in the neck if I use something like the SLUG in the bridge?

Re: Replacement pickups for PRS SE Torero - Doom metal with string definition.

You should really try it in the bridge atleast. The whole djent thing has more to do with the amp than the pickups. The dime has a ton of punch. It is a very versatile pickup. You just have to dial your amp in differently than you would with a normal humbucker. I've run mine for a long time in an all mahogany, and alder an maple guitars through a peavey xxx. Never had a problem with it not having enough mids to produce the djent sound, or any other tone matter of fact. The split sounds and parallel tones are great as well. And as far as clarity goes, for me, it is the absolute best.

Also, if your amp has enough gain, you don't need an overdrive pedal up front to boost it. The dimebucker already has that boosted feel to it for metal. If you want a lower gain classic rock sound, you can work your tone and volume knobs to get it there. And, you may or may not want to do it, a spin a split increases it's versatility tons. It does a really good imitation of a tele lead pickup split half way.

Also, maybe the '59/Custom Hybrid?

On the short list.

The Dime bridge is on the short list but for the neck position.....just not sure I want his signature written on my guitar :P

I use an Axe FX so I have plenty of gain and tone sculpting.

Re: Replacement pickups for PRS SE Torero - Doom metal with string definition.

dime used a 59 bridge model on the neck, that's how hot the dimebucker is, also some of his guitars had a dimarzio super distortion on the neck, also the dimebucker is so insanely hot you can slap a JB or a Distortion bridge on the neck slot and and even with the dime at the same height the dime will drive the front of the amp a bit harder.

also there are not too much pickups that can handle the dime on the neck slot, for example, another dimebucker, a lace deathbucker can also handle the dimebucker on the neck, the slug can basically handle anything on the neck slot, if you're crazy you could do a El Diablo on the neck and Slug on the bridge, that way you have almost any tony iommi tone you want (the El Diablo was marketed as scott ian's signature but in fact the pickup was designed for tony iommi, and then ditched when iommi decided to build his signature bucker with gibson, ian tried the pickup being a big sabbath fan and loved it so much that he slaped an el diablo in almost any guitar he had, nowadays with his sig amp ian doesn't need the el diablo anymore, but he still uses some of his el diablo equipped guitars once in a while)

right now i think you should hear as many demos and samples of the pickups on the list and go with the voices and textures you like the most, as all of the pickups already recommended will do what you want, just with their own character and texture

I agree. Next step is to check out some demos.

Cheers!

Re: Replacement pickups for PRS SE Torero - Doom metal with string definition.

Check out the Lace Dirty Heshers too (Matt Pike sig pups). They sound awesome. A friend of mine has them in his mahogany LP-style Edwards and they sound incredible for sludge/doom..

The Alumitone Deathbucker's I have in my Dinky (..& just put one in my new Ibanez SA as well) sound fantastic for doom too (for both rhythm & solo's). I play in a doom metal (not stoner/sludge) band and they're my fave bridge pickup by far (can be over dark & boomy in the neck though..)

Rough studio mix from a song we recorded a while ago...

I think I prefer this one from the SD range. The demos show that it can do a lot, in terms of its versatility and it seems quite unique in its ability to do PAF and tight - not that those two qualities are mutually exclusive of course.

There is a SLUG neck pickup as well... Its also $30 cheaper than an El Diablo

Re: Replacement pickups for PRS SE Torero - Doom metal with string definition.

I have a feeling the SLUG may be a little dark due to the output....? I think I need something with less bass and balanced mids for the bridge (so the extended chords don't get mushy) and something quite bright in the neck for cleans and both on together soloing. I'm not a sludge player but I can achieve that sound with any pickup.

The 59/Custom Hybrid in the bridge is very tempting with maybe an Alnico II Pro in the neck. I definitely need something that will do classic sounds well and then tighten up when I throw gain at it. The 59 Custom seems one of the better sounding off the shelf pups for my needs.

I have checked the Lace website. Their descriptions are useless so I'm checking the videos. The Pike and Mastadon signature pups sound decent.

Re: Replacement pickups for PRS SE Torero - Doom metal with string definition.

Well I have 4 guitars which all need pickups ranging from actives in a Prestige Ibanez RG down to super vintage sounding pups for clean/breaking up sounds in an Ibanez AR420. Those two will have EMG 81's and some unpotted PAFs respectively. They will stay at home for studio tracking.

After more reading and listening, I may go for Alt 8 and 59/Custom Hybrid in the bridge positions for my Torero and Michael Kelly Hex Deluxe guitars respectively. This should give me a lot of options for live use (I can only fly with one guitar due to weight) while continuing with the super hot thought to super vintage pallette for studio.

When I get them fitted I will report back. Nothing worse than an unfinished thread!

Any more suggestions are welcome still. I need something tight for low end staccato stuff but with a nice PAF type open sound for full chords, and no shrill sounds; I often notice my unwound B and E are a bit too bright.

I would suggest the regular Custom here. This seems to tick those boxes.

Cheers buddy. I'll check it out.

Is there anything that would pair up nicely in the neck position? I like my neck pups to be quite bright and I like the idea of a scatterwound alnico IV.

Re: Replacement pickups for PRS SE Torero - Doom metal with string definition.

Firebirdguy72 made a A4 9.5k humbucker for me with mismatched coils. Not sure if it's scatterwound but it sounds fantastic in the neck of my orange strat copy. Don't know how busy he is, but if you don't find anything else that floats your boat and you're in the 'States ( not sure about shipping overseas) pm him.

Re: Replacement pickups for PRS SE Torero - Doom metal with string definition.

I disagree about the Custom. It doesn't have enough midrange focus for what he wants.

heavy when I want to play Djenty stuff and have really good string definition for the extended chords.

Strong midrange is very important for djent sounds along with adding needed definition for low extended chords.

Re: Replacement pickups for PRS SE Torero - Doom metal with string definition.

Sounds like a familiar recommendation. (See completely-ignored Post 15.)

In post #20 I said I like the look of them and they remain a contender. Cheers man!

:)

This guitar sounds Djenty unplugged. I think it's the ebony fretboard and the way I play (when I decide to do that stuff). I may be able to pull those tones from a few of these suggestions so possibly looking for something without too much of a mid range spike....? Sorry if this confuses matters. I'm still researching myself. For the bridge I'd like something quite tight and strong but without losing all the good stuff we enjoy hearing when we decide to play something soulful. The neck needs to be pure PAF but able to keep up with the bridge. Of course, we all want the best of all worlds!!
