replacement PU for MM Axis/ Van Halen

Hi everybody,
Could the MusicMan Axis / VH owner share their experience concerning replacement PU? What PU did you try? What did it change?
I think that I've read something about a Custom Shop SD VH model in the forum. Did any of you try this one in a MM Axis VH model?
Thank you.

Re: replacement PU for MM Axis/ Van Halen

My first thought is...Why would you want to change it? What don't you like about that pickup?

Re: replacement PU for MM Axis/ Van Halen

I've already changed both PU. I've put APH1s in it, and then came back to the original bridge PU.
I'd like to have a bridge PU with less bass and a more open sound.

Re: replacement PU for MM Axis/ Van Halen

The original bridge pickup is really hot and fat sounding...I replaced it too! Sounded great through a really bright cruncky Marshall but through my Fenders I didn't like it as much as I could have.

In mine, I went for a brighter pickup: a 59B, but I had to modify the legs and shorten them and make them rounder so I could fit the pickup in and screw it directly to the body as it was originally.

They're Non adjustable pickups in the MM Axis I had.

I think a 59B or Custom would be nice in an Axis...really depends what you're after. I wanted a more open, more transparent, more vintage tone.

If you want more mids, the Custom Custom would be nice.

A 78 would be really cool too for a more vintage tone that's still EVH all the way...hard not to recommend that one!

I wanted to hear Clapton's Cream tone from my Axis so that's why I went with the 59B...worked too!

That sounds like a DiMarzio Norton. The original Axis pup is similar to the TZ, the Norton is exactly that, more open with less (tighter) bass than the TZ.

From Duncan, the CC might be good but may be a little too compressed. The Custom is nice but, if you like the mids of the stock pickup, you may miss some of that.

Re: replacement PU for MM Axis/ Van Halen

That's one guitar where I wouldn't swap pickups. The stock bridge pickup is actually closer to the Air Zone than the Tone Zone.

The Norton may give what you're looking for. Match it up with the Air Norton. ;)

I don't think the CC is too compressed at all. It can be very open. From my experience (13 years of it), it reacts very well to the amp. It may work great in the Axis. I haven't tried it in Basswood body so I couldn't tell ya for sure.

I swapped out the bridge pup in my Axis for a Dimarzio Air Zone and never looked back!

Re: replacement PU for MM Axis/ Van Halen

I have two Axis guitars, and hate the stock pickup in both. It actually sounds DIFFERENT in both. The Floyd version (standard Axis) actually has tons of bass and yes.....treble.

The "vintage trem" version I have (Axis Super Sport) is like the Floyd version, but with the top & bottom sliced off, so the mids really, really stand out, and sound really warm.

Either way, it's still waaaaay to compressed & sludgey (17k wind), so I'm about to switch it up too. These pickups are really more optimal for the "Carnal Knowledge" tone, and later material. They aren't based on any of Ed's older pickups, although the bullsh*t articles out at the time would lead you to believe they were. I've head that Steve Whatshisname at DiMarzio claimed years later that he actually never measured a pickup of Ed's that was higher than 9k, but take that with a grain of salt. Needless to say, Eddie was ready to change it up.

I can see where a Custom Custom would be the dead-on choice for the standard Axis, as it would "fill-in" the holes left by the Floyd, but without all of that 17k sludge. Better yet, an A2 Hybrid would probably be the *ultimate* replacement pickup in that guitar. 11.5k of Alnico 2 or Alnico 3 goodness.

As for my Axis Super Sport (which has the warm vintage trem), I'm leaning towards either an A3 Hybrid, a Phat Cat, or DiMarzio's Virtual Hot PAF. The pickups are getting changed until after I get it refretted with some taller wire.

Re: replacement PU for MM Axis/ Van Halen

thank you for your answers.
Anybody tried the Duncan EVH model?

What would be the differences between this one and a Custom custom?
