I know the hot rod's are quite popular for there good price and good sound, I bought a used one for 375. Heres the catch the speakers are in not so good condition. It looks like someone used razons on the speakers? Anyone have any recommendations for speakers? I would love to get a brit sound with good cleans and can do overdrive and distort. What do I need to know about ohms?

Re: Replacement speakers for HRD 212

You need a 8 ohm speaker.:) The Celestion V30 is a popular choice for HRD user's that what a more rock tone. The Eminence redcoat line are also great speakers and more reasonably priced (U.S. Made:usa1: ) I play mostly Blues so the Stock HRD speaker does me fine. If I need more grind I have 1x12 cab. w/t a V30 in it.(you can run a 2nd 8 ohm load no problem w/t a HRD) If I really need to move some air... I have a 2x12 w/t a Private Jack & Texas Heat in it.

The HRD is not a 'Brit' voiced amp, so I hope you are not unhappy with the end result. I tried to make mine sound like a Marshall but it just didn't happen.

I tried several speakers in my HRD and I liked the d120f JBL the most. Then Jensen c12 works nicely too. But these 2 speakers augment the voice of the amp, nice and Fener-ish.

The closest I got to a Brit sound was with a celestion G12T-75. I don't really like that speaker in a closed back cabinet, but it sounded pretty cool in the HRD, for rock tone. There was a definite comprimise in that great clean tone though.

Hmm, sorry I don't have the best advice.. so, listen to KMC, not me :laugh2:

I dont want a "brit" voice persay but a nice rock tone and capable of cleans.

Re: Replacement speakers for HRD 212

Are the redcoats for marshall replacements and the patriots fender?

No. Not really. The redcoats use a British voice coil. The Pats. are American.:D That's why I suggested the Texas Heat. It's in the Patriot line But, I believe they use a Brit voice coil. Kinda the best of both worlds.

Re: Replacement speakers for HRD 212

you said 212 so i'm guessing you mean hot rod deville

in that case you'd need 2 16 ohm speakers for an 8 ohm load

my typical approach to speakers is this

1 - get an amp you like the sound of (i hope you played one before you got it, but if not go find one & play it at the volumes you intend to use it at, and even if you have go play one again at those volumes

2 - based on that, think of an amp that would compliment the sound well. What amp would you run in stereo with the one you have, ideally

3 - get the speakers that come in that amp, or higher wattage versions of the ones in that amp

for instance, i like the sound of my bassman, if i hadda run it in stereo i'd prolly do a jmp full stack. Most of those have g12h30's, so now i'm running the bassman with eminence wizards, which are higher wattage g12h30's.

that's also how the plexi with v30's/swamp thangs happened, which was also a tremendous success
