Replacing Ibanez tuners with locking tuners

ehdwuld

A Ficus
So I was gonna change the regular Ibanez tuners with locking tuners
The regular Ibanez tuners have no screw to hold it like most sperzel style do
The Fender brands are this way but don't come in black
The Carvin tuners have the two pins like the Fenders
Does anyone here have any experience with the Carvin tuners and possibly Ibanez guitars and could tell me if they are drop in replacement

The Carvin tuners are 25/64" which converts to 10 mm which should be the same as the Ibanez

Anyone?

Thanks

Re: Replacing Ibanez tuners with locking tuners

The Carvins should be drop-in replacements.

Fender's USA (Schaller-made) and the similar Kluson lockers (LINK) have 2-pins like your Ibanez, but the distance of the pins from the center shaft is slightly greater, requiring redrilling.

Re: Replacing Ibanez tuners with locking tuners

I have been putting Planet waves Trim Lok in my guitars the day I get them regardless of the size of the hole since they came out. Just better to me , cuts the string off and locks them down 18 to 1.

Re: Replacing Ibanez tuners with locking tuners

Planet Waves are my go-to tuners replacing all of my stock tuners...like Oinkus. Any slight modification that may be necessary is worth the trouble.

Re: Replacing Ibanez tuners with locking tuners

I wonder bout the auto trim function
If you are taking the strings on and off
To tweak pickups and whatnot

Wouldn't the strings keep getting shorter and shorter

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Planet Waves tuners aren't the hidden pin type...

No.

Once they are trimmed, if you take the strings off then put them on again, you just "lock" them into the tuner at the same place they were before you took them off.

The tuners only trim off the excess string

Ahh
ok got it

thanks

I just ordered the Carvin tuners

I think. as Securb said, these should be drop in
I will let ya'll know

now I gotta start looking at some locking tuners for my Martin
I think Grover 502's should be drop in replacements
as Martin uses a Sperzel with a centered alignment screw

ya know I realize that one doesnt NEED locking tuners on an acoustic
but it really does make the string changes so much easier

Re: Replacing Ibanez tuners with locking tuners

yep they just showed up today
the Carvins were exactly the same except with a locking thumb wheel on the back
pins were exact match
the shaft was was slightly shorter on the Carvin tuners
the hole for the string was in the same spot, just the shaft had been crowned lower

the threaded nuts were interchangeable

thanks again Securb

but in the course of changing the strings my D'Addario set had twowound "D" strings and no "G" string
They had color coded balls, and they put two Blacks and no Green in the package

I sent customer service a note
I have never had to deal with them before
but I'm sure they will make it right

Re: Replacing Ibanez tuners with locking tuners

I put a set of Grovers in mine, you just have to be careful when drilling out new screw holes.

Re: Replacing Ibanez tuners with locking tuners

I use Gotohs and drill a hole, but that's cool that the Carvins fit perfect.

Re: Replacing Ibanez tuners with locking tuners

I tend to put a lot of effort into making thing easier
Y'all are right it would have been easier to put a hole and screw in

Re: Replacing Ibanez tuners with locking tuners

So last night as I swapped the tuners on my candy apple Squire
I noticed that they have the same pins and spacing as the Carvin and Ibanez
The locking tuners I was gonna put on were Fender spaced
Which, as mentioned above, has the pins set out from the shaft 3mm further from the main tuner shaft

I hesitated, contemplated getting another set of Carvins, then just drilled some holes 3mm further from the main tuner
They aren't perfectly straight but they should work

Thanks for reading
