Report: Greeney Mod Content

Fellas,

I think I don't like single coils as much as I should, and that's why I decided that I tested the surfers long enough, and went back to my beloved 8.75K/7.70K antiquity HB set. (Apples/Oranges :duh: I guess my 3 other strats should do! :laugh2: )

The bridge has an a5 magnet, and the neck has the stock dun-aged one.

Here is a pic of it with the surfers and another with the timbuckers (the ants are of the same color, thus, that's the way it looks now).

This time I did the Peter Green mod, physically. I mean the bridge and neck is magnetically out of phase. This guitar has a very woody tone, and was an ideal candidate for that mod. Guess what happened! Instant success. I really can do almost perfectly the intro of "need your love so bad".

BTW I did not flip the neck pickup, so shoot me. :D

Love it!

B

PS. I am gonna keep the surfers, so don't get any ideas. :burnout:

I've tried the Green mod. Its amazing

I agree. A lot of people don't like that sound, but I really love it. When I had that setup in my les paul, I was using an A3 loaded Seth Lover neck and an A5 loaded Antiquity.

Re: Report: Greeney Mod Content

I ALWAYS have this tone on at least one guitar...right now it is in my aluminum neck Kramer, with Gibson Iommi pups...it's like a metallic, overwound, Peter green!!!

Re: Report: Greeney Mod Content

I hear that very woody tone from Greeney's paul, on Fleetwood Mac stuff and especially on Gary Moore's Blues for Greeney. That's why I replaced the alnico 3 magnet that my neck ant had, with the stock dun-aged one.

I think I prefer the middle position (without the out of phase stuff) from a very woody (and sorta thick) neck and bright bridge. Me thinks extremes help to get a great middle tone.

Finding out that this also holds for out of phase stuff was quite cool. What I do is to lower the vol of the bridge very slightly so that the neck takes over but still I hear the out of phase thingy. And turn down the neck tone to 4-5. The result is hard to describe. What I get is a thick neck tone, but has that out of phase sparkle in it. Soo cool!

Aly neck for the Greeny tone! Blasphemy :banghead: :blackeye:

I, of course, am joking brother! :laugh2:

What about them Iommi pickups? I have a close friend who swears that they do the Angus tone better than Gibson's Angusbuckers. He is a Gibson freak! :offtopic:

Re: Report: Greeney Mod Content

You know Hamer wired thier dual humbucking guitars that way up until about 1992 or 93. One pickup had the magnet flipped and when I'd combine them they'd be out of phase. I'd play one volume control off of the other to dial in my favorite shade of honk.

BB King's ES-355's and Lucille guitars also have out of phase humbuckers. If you watch BB he usually has both pickups on and he'll keep adjusting his two volume controls until he gets the shade of nasal honk he's after.

I'd don't really care for that pinched out of phase tone myself.

But I love Peter Green's and BB's tone.

Magnetically? It's the same as electrical phase reversal ... The only difference is that you can't reverse the two conductor leads (ref. braided shield single conductor). Turning the pup around doesn't have anything to do with that, but it does cause a small change in tone via the polepieces. Glad it worked out for you B! :cool3:

Re: Report: Greeney Mod Content

Thanks for the reminder doc. I've thought about doing the Greeny mod in the past but wasn't sure I wanted it all the time. I've just realized that since I now have two LPs I can do the Greeny mod on one of them!

I'm waiting for some tall pickup rings for my Standard. Once those arrive I reckon I'll be taking the covers off those double cream Seths again and flipping one of the magnets! :32:

Remember the cool wiring diagram you've done for me, 2 DPDT's which would enable me to get electric out of phase and to use 2 vol/2 tone controls at the same time (among other things like spliiting and all). I've done that on another pickguard. It's just that I love the antiquity neck with the dun-aged magnet (a3 is mighty cool too, but I have a3 PGn's and 59n's, and I was looking for a very woody tone).

Yeah magnetic and electric out of phase are the same, it's just ants come with braid wires. ;) Turning around the pickup sure does not have anything to do with that, but it is just that that's the way PG had you know. Magnetically, out of phase neck hb, flipped. ;)

You gotta try it!

BTW I too have paid $26.00 for 2 gibson historic tall rings! :banghead: I love them, and at that point did not know of any other company doing them. Do you?

Re: Report: Greeney Mod Content

Cool, Doc...glad you like it. If I had another LP I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Re: Report: Greeney Mod Content

I ended up with the Greeney mod in my LP by accident when I installed a Dimarzio HB in the bridge and a Seymour Duncan in the neck as they are reverse in polarity when installed per respective manufacturers' instructions. I hardly ever used the middle position before but now, this mod gives me a third, totally unique sound option which I tend to use frequently. There is a slight volume drop but the nasal tone is perfect for certain blues solos as well as interesting rhythm work.

I really like the Iommi's...I tried them in a few guitars before the Kramer and I must say they are perfect in that guitar, not as hot as you might think. They have a real tight bottom and a real pretty almost sparkling high end! I got them onsale at GC for $40.00 for the PAIR!!! However, i did not like them that much in any other guitar...and I tried several.

Re: Report: Greeney Mod Content

Can anyone give me a god description of how to go about the Greeny mod?

I've got a nice Greco Les Paul here I might want to try it on...

Re: Report: Greeney Mod Content

Skare, you just* take one of the magnets out and roll it like a log, then put it back in. Green had the neck one upside down, but I don't think it matters.

*Be careful taking the magnet out.

Having the neck pup upside down DOES matter...in a Les Paul the poles are just under the 24th fret node...turning the pup upside down changes the tone of the neck and the neck and bridge tones...quite a bit

Re: Report: Greeney Mod Content

Oh...I meant the magnet. Like you say, Green did have the coils reversed (the screws closer to the bridge), which some folks think sounds better. I think that's what you are talking about...I don't think flipping just the magnet changes the sound of a pickup when it is used alone; I didn't notice it when I was fooling around with the Green mod.
