Mercy me, did I ever do a good thing by joining this site!
I have now "hot-rodded" my otherwise tired-sounding MIM Strat w/maple neck and fretboard (that was my first electric guitar, ordered on the net probably just in February), with S. Duncans (and locking F./Schaller tuners). Replacing the dreary OEMs, based on our discussions, I have now "dropped in",
1. (Your least favorite as a group), in the bridge -- Trembucker TB6 Distortion. Some of you said that it (or the non-Strat analogue SH6) was too much output. PSHAW! I LOVE IT! (Others among you said give it a try.)
2. (Thanks especially to Folo and to others as well!), in the mid-position -- Alnico Pro II for Strat. Wow, and don't you ever get a rich, powerful and nuanced tone out of this baby! Whew! For the first time ever, I begin to understand why anybody would even want a single coil! Mama mia!
3. (You were virtually unanimous), in the neck -- Little '59. I chucked an unopened Lil' Screamin' Demon just because I trust you guys that much -- and what a sound this bleedin' '59 makes!! Good golly, miss Molly!! Thanks!!
AND THE COMBINATION!! All three sound very different, and all very good indeed. My humble MIM Strat has gone from being my least favorite guitar (I got a bunch of 'em now), to something mighty interesting! The fact that they are all so different is not an unalloyed plus in some people's minds I am sure, but in the one sense, it makes the otherwise lifeless axe exceedingly versatile. Every *one* of these pups has a strong, really interesting and impressive sound.
I truly thank all of you for the ongoing education. My fellow band-members, bless their hearts, well, their eyes just roll when I get to chatting about this stuff, but when I hit a note or a chord, they are like, "Wow, where the heck did you get that sound, dude?!" And they know it's really from this site and the accumulated knowledge, of course. My appreciative best to you all!
