Resurrecting a Charvel

Re: Resurrecting a Charvel

Thanks for the replies! I'm surprised most of you kept it simple and didn't opt to change the bridge, which is one of the worst floyds ever made.

Ok, if the trem is that bad, then a Schaller in black. But the color stays.

Re: Resurrecting a Charvel

I would slap a single hum black pick guard on it. That would go good against the color in my opnion, or a red, and it would allow covering up the neck pickup cavity. Probably a Demon in the bridge if you have a high gain amp. I don't know much about floyds but I'll take your word for it that its sucks and install a good one. If it was me, I would also consider putting on a strat head neck, but I don't know if you want to go that far or make that kind of investment? Basswood body?

Re: Resurrecting a Charvel

I don't want to change the neck. It's a nice neck, it just needs new frets. I was thinking of adding a pick guard so I can put a single coil/stacked humbucker in the neck. That's my favorite pickup combo... H/S. I'd go with a Duncan Distortion and STK-S6 then.

Lake Placid Blues, the body is basswood.

Re: Resurrecting a Charvel

Feed it to the wood chipper - you know it makes sense...:firedevil

Playing devil's advocate are we? What I like about Seymour Duncan is the ability to listen to sound samples of the various pickups. That's how I decided I really like the sound of the JB even though my wallet doesn't. They also have the Tone Wizard wherein you put your parameters of the guitar and musical style and bango you get some good suggestions although it is all very subjective. Some people like Fender Custom Shop guitars some like Squiers (GUILTY!!!) but do your research, only you know what you like and ultimately you make the decisions. I mean if you wanted to paint it pink with purple dots and string it with rubber bands that's your deal, right? Other (not all) manufacturers have sound samples on their web-sites so go through and check things out. You may find a Blueberry Hill "Mean Greenie" that sounds like heaven to you. But updating the electronics is a good idea, painting it is a good idea (although I, too, like the color) but think, "What does my dream guitar look like?" and go from there...

Re: Resurrecting a Charvel

Thanks for the replies.

Not sure when I'll be fixing the guitar up, but I'll share pics when it's done.

Re: Resurrecting a Charvel

Of course the real answer is, it's a piece of rubbish and you should send it to me to properly dispose of it.

Re: Resurrecting a Charvel

Hi! Those old Charvels are killer. and, the trems really arent bad. I dont see where anyone has asked: What style are you looking to play? what amp you run thru? What kind of tones are you looking to achieve? As far as the body and neck, leave em be. (except a possible refret and repaint if you prefer.) but bridge should be ok, unless you flat dont like it. pickups will be dependent on your style

Good one lol.

I never liked the trem on this guitar. I actually blocked a long time ago and it's still blocked. I'll definitely upgrade it. The neck stays.

I'd like to repaint it but it's not critical. We'll see. I'm more concerned with the pickups.

They are great platforms mod or just maintain/upgrade. The necks are fantastic. Have fun with her. This one was just like yours.

Man - the options are MIND BOGGLING!!!!

1. Put a JB in and otherwise leave it a la Skid Row

2. PG/CC and leave as is

3. Duncan 78 and Van Halenize it in Red/Black/White

4. Demon in the Bridge, Fill Cavity and paint it Ferrari Red

5. Convert neck cavity to single coil, add cool rails neck, and Distortion Bridge

6. Sand it down, oil it up, and go with A C5 and a Jazz, add some mini switches for phase etc….

7. Paint it yellow, and somePink Dimarzio Evolutions with Green knobs and dots and get your Steve Vai on….

8. Fill neck Cavity, Paint Black, tune to D, add Full Shred, and some blood red Pentagrams and other devil graphics

9. Keep it stock, but Cantrel tribute with stickers etc…

Re: Resurrecting a Charvel

Looks great, Ironikaika!

Great suggestions, Aceman.

1. Matte Black with chrome hardware. A three way toggle switch (Petrucci mod), coil tap in tone, and a set of Duncan Black Winters.

2. Blood red with black hardware A three way toggle switch (Petrucci mod), coil tap in tone, Duncan Custom 5 in the bridge and Jazz in the neck.

3. Orange (inner) to deep purple burst (outer edges) Chrome hardware, three way toggle switch (Petrucci mod), coil tap in tone, Duncan Distortion bridge, Sentient Neck (both Zebra)

The list goes on....

Re: Resurrecting a Charvel

Wire whatever that pup is direct to the output, block the tremolo with a random piece of wood, and rock the F out with it.

Of all the guitars I've had, the one above was the most "rock" sounding. Plus I didn't have to care if I dinged it or whatever.

Then I say paint it red and put on a black H/S pickguard. The pointy headstock will look fine with black on red. This was actually a Charvel appointment back in the day. Charvel pickguards were usually black, thicker than a Fender PG, and only used 8 mounting screws. Original Charvels with pick guards:
