Re: (Return of) The Well CXXI: Chris of Arabia - fire 'em in...

What were your impressions of SXSW?

I enjoy it, though it's a whole different world away from what I'm used to. I've done it 3 times now, and have registered again for this coming March. It generally takes me a couple of days to acclimatise and work out where I am, but after that I find myself walking miles. My main interest is the music part obviously.

Who were your earliest musical influences?

I'd start with British glam rock in the early 70's, then Queen, Genesis, then onto the punk scene in the late 70's. After that it's been pretty varied; I'm as happy listening to Depeche Mode as I am to Metallica, or Soundgarden

What are your thoughts on classical music? Do you have any favorites?

What one famous guitar would you most like to add to your collection?

You get to spend an evening with any two women in the world. Nobody will ever know. Who do you pick and what do you do?

Re: (Return of) The Well CXXI: Chris of Arabia - fire 'em in...

Oh, so we're doing Wells again? Neato!!

What was the first song you learned to play on guitar, front-to-back?

Own any basses?

Re: (Return of) The Well CXXI: Chris of Arabia - fire 'em in...

When and what was the last gig you've been to?

I'm sure it was Soundgarden's second show at SXSW in March - it was done open air on the roof of a multi-storey car park in downtown Austin, surrounded by other high-rise buildings. Very unusual, but it made for a great atmosphere.

Re: (Return of) The Well CXXI: Chris of Arabia - fire 'em in...

What band would you love to be asked to fill in for on a set - and what are few songs you would do with them?

Ace, Gene, Peter, or Paul?

What style of music that you DON'T play, would you love to play?

First concert, last concert, best concert ever attended?

The state of music; Better, worse, or same as it ever was?

One in disposable tool - what is yours?

Favorite meal?

Favorite beer, wine and liquor?

Mrs. Arabia - where met, how long together, favorite thing about her?

United States finical situation: Untenable in the long run, or will be just fine?

Favorite guitar tone(s) of all time (may respond with up to five)?

Re: (Return of) The Well CXXI: Chris of Arabia - fire 'em in...

What's your story with motorcycles? You mentioned a Kawasaki.
When did you start riding? Do you own any bikes now? What's your favorite bike you've had? Any bike coming in the future?

You get to spend an evening with any two women in the world. Nobody will ever know. Who do you pick and what do you do?

#1 would be Sigourney Weaver, and all we're gonna do is talk Aliens

#2 would be Frida Kahlo and we're going to put the world to rights...

They don't have to be alive do they?

Re: (Return of) The Well CXXI: Chris of Arabia - fire 'em in...

What band would you love to be asked to fill in for on a set - and what are few songs you would do with them?

Whilst I obviously couldn't do this justice, it would have to be Rush - Limelight, Closer to the Heart, La Villa Strangiato and Between the Wheels would have to be on there

Ace, Gene, Peter, or Paul?

I'm really not that fussed which of them gets to valet the car

What style of music that you DON'T play, would you love to play?

I suppose classical style like Steve Hackett or Rodrigo y Gabriela can do

First concert, last concert, best concert ever attended?

The Electric Light Orchestra were first all the way back in 1976

Soundgarden were the last in March this year

The best concert is a tough one, but I'll go with Fleetwood Mac in 1980 (I think) at Stafford Bingley Hall - never before have I seen an entire audience dancing on their seats, in what basically amounted to a cow shed (it's the County Showground other times)

The state of music; Better, worse, or same as it ever was?

I still think it's out there, but a) I rarely get to see it because of where I am, and b) the kind of stuff we tend to appreciate is not getting much in the way of media attention right now - the industry appears to have finally work out how it wants to package and sell things; what we like isn't it.

One in disposable tool - what is yours?

Sorry, lost me with that one

Favorite meal?

Give me a roast dinner with all the trimmings and I'm happy.

Favorite beer, wine and liquor?

A pint of Guinness if you're offering please

Mrs. Arabia - where met, how long together, favorite thing about her?

We met in May 1996 in a pub in Preston, got married in July 2000, and the fact that she was willing to let me take a job in somewhere like Saudi Arabia speaks volumes for her - she did that when we were planning a wedding, and weren't actually able to live together properly until August 2002 when she joined me out there.

United States finical situation: Untenable in the long run, or will be just fine?

It would seem from afar as if there is something of an imbalance in such things right now; they have a habit of 'correcting' themselves eventually, which some may find rather painful when it happens. You'll survive though

Favorite guitar tone(s) of all time (may respond with up to five)?

Gavin Rossdale from 'Golden State', Steve Hackett on 'Firth of Fifth', Gary Moore on 'Empty Rooms', QOTSA on 'Little Sister' and Dave Gilmour on 'Comfortably Numb'

Tiswas or Multi-Coloured Swap Shop?

I did...

When did you start riding?

I got my first bike in 1979, it was a Kawasaki Z250 that looked something like this...

Do you own any bikes now?

None at all unfortunately. I haven't ridden, or been on one since 1983 when I sold my last and moved onto 4 wheels

What's your favorite bike you've had?

Probably this one, my 1982 GPz750. It could quite easily keep pace with one of my mates' Z1, which was a couple of years older in design and rather heavier. It was the last of the twin rear shock versions before they all went mono-shock. It looked a little like this, though I can see at least one non-original part on it

Any bike coming in the future?

It seems unlikely, Mrs of Arabia may well disown me at that point.
