Revelation: I don't like modelling amps

Re: Revelation: I don't like modelling amps

In my opinion, the Roland Cube 60 is the best sounding modeling amp and at a very reasonable price. I just picked up a brand new one in the box at my local store for $269.99. At that price, it is untouchable. Loud 60 watts, 1x12 speaker, super versatile, and built like a tank. It won't make me forget about my triple-rectifier, but for what it is, I haven't found anything that could beat it.

Dangly:

Try a SF Princeton Reverb (someone put a 12" speaker in mine before I got it)...great tone.

Good luck with your search.

Re: Revelation: I don't like modelling amps

The only analogy I can make... A modelling amp sounds like a recording of a guitar. Any other sort of amp sounds like you're actually in the room, playing the guitar :laugh2:

bingo.

that is why they can sound convincing on a good recording, but not to the player playing them. they feel fake

Re: Revelation: I don't like modelling amps

I've been playing my crappy Johnson amp for the last month or so as i've been to lazy to take my amp to a tech and let me tell you. I know that solid state is definately inferior. I hate that amp with a passion. I don't even know where i got it.

Re: Revelation: I don't like modelling amps

depends on the day for me. yesterday, I woke up and played through my line 6 flextone I and had a ball. by the afternoon I was jamming through my carvin x100b and having fun too. tonight, I'll probably play through the power block and FAB overdrive. just depends on the day and mood.

Re: Revelation: I don't like modelling amps

heh... I've never really HATED solid state... I'm holding out for my Libra. I like solid state distortion... and tube distortion.

and I like playing my errr tiny johnson :D sure it doesn't sound GREAT, but it sounds better than lots of surprising things :laugh2: and has feel ;)

yeah, small amps like that are fun because it's like an angry midget trying to punch its way out of a tiny prison.

Re: Revelation: I don't like modelling amps

My Line 6 Flextone can sound pretty damned good, and I've been complimented on the tone. I think you have to tweak around to get your "sound." I played with another guy who had the exact same amp, and his sounded bad - just hadn't taken the time to properly set it up. He wanted my patches, but we quit playing together before he managed to get 'em from me, which was fine since it took me literally a few years to finally find the sounds I liked, and I didn't want to just give away the mojo for free to a noobie.

The factory presets never worked well for me, so I had to tweak and tweak, and now have about 3 "go-to" patches. I put a Tubescreamer in front to squeeze it a bit more. I cannot tell you how it compares to tubes, since I haven't owned one *yet*. My Splawn should be here in a couple of weeks and I'll have a much better idea of Modelers vs Tubes. I hope to good God that the tube amp blows the digital out of the water after all the $$ I have sunk.
