Review: XOTIC RC Booster

To all ~

At the expense of a few hundred dollars ($179 or so), I decided to splurge on a new pedal for my rig. I browsed through MusicToyz and picked up an XOTIC RC Booster.

Now, having read some varying reviews on the pedal, I decided that I'd try it with all of my electrics and various OD pedals. This isn't the most eloquent review I've written, but I wanted to get it on the web for those looking for a Clean Boost review:

Positive Results:

1. CLEAN: The pedal is the cleanest, non-coloring boost I've EVER HEARD with just the guitar and amp.
2. ENHANCING: If your amp sounds a smidge dull, this pedal breathes a bit of life into it. It doesn't color, it just adds a bit more life. Very cool.
3. COMBINATIONS: Ok; this is where the pedal was really fun to play...you know, when you smile at the opportunity to turn it on? With my Landgraff in the down toggle position, the RC Booster enhanced what was coming out of the pedal. VERY VERY COOL. What is even better is that should you need to adjust the EQ a bit, you can add more treble or bass.....the controls have a lot of power, so if you need EQ capabilities, this pedal will do it! It enhances the harmonics and everthing else that was going on before you turned on the pedal....and, again, with no color.

Negative Results:

1. You need to put his pedal BEFORE your OD's, Delays, Flanges, etc. It doesn't have the same boosting effect when you put it at the end of your signal chain. I guess that isn't really a negative, but you should be aware of it before you buy the pedal.

2. The gain knob doesn't do too much. If you are looking for a pedal that can add GAIN to the signal, this is the wrong pedal for you. It adds a SMIDGE, but not much. I think the AC Booster is what you need if you want more gain.

Overall:

1. With all the controls (volume, gain, treble and bass), you can use it with ANY PEDAL. That is the best part. It worked equally well with my Landgraff as it did with my Morley (which I use with my Strat). At first, I thought about buying another one for added flexibility, but have now decided against it. This will stay first in my chain from now on.

3. I'm going to buy the AC Booster so I can use it with weaker gain-type OD's, such as an 808 or Red Snapper SINCE the RC Booster doesn't add much gain. The RC Booster would really enhance the overall signal of the 808, but it won't be like piggy-backing 2 of them together (ala SRV).

4. If you want to avoid the Mid Hump of the Klon (and have 2 tone controls vs 1), this is ABSOLUTELY THE BEST BOOST PEDAL ON THE MARKET. It is so clean, clear and flexible for volume and EQ, it is scary. It has enough volume to blow your wall down.

5. For $179, the RC Booster is the best OD on the market if you are into high-end equipment. My days of using a Klon are LONG GONE and I'm happy. :jim

6. MusicToyz was a joy with which to deal. My pedal got to me in 2 days and ordering was a piece of cake. I highly recommend them if you want to pick up a good pedal. Although they don't have a 30 day return policy like Musician's Friend, they do offer a 5 day policy. Plus, they have a huge selection of boutique pedals, which allows you to try the new Menatone, Fulltone or anything else with NO obligation to keep. Doesn't get much better than that if you drop $500 on a pedal that you don't like.

Very Best Regards,

Re: Review: XOTIC RC Booster

That sounds like a pretty cool addition. I've had my eye on a SIB Fat Drive for awhile. A friend of mine had one and i really dug the life it brought to the single coils in his strat and my tele. I've never heard of the XOTIC before-I'll have to check it out.

Do you like the boost with humbuckers? I've not really thought they ever need much.

Re: Review: XOTIC RC Booster

Dave,

For my rig, the "boost" (or pedal) is really intended to give my Landgraff or other OD Pedals a slight "push" in volume to kick me into Soloing territory. In this case, it works REALLY WELL for a clear volume adjustment.

Now, in terms of using with Humbuckers, it works equally well with those and Single Coils. There was no problem with switching between guitars.

It also works well on a standalone basis for adding a bit more volume and vibe to single coils and Humbuckers, but I wouldn't use with my Les Pauls that way. I'd use it to push an OD Pedal into sonic territory.

Overall, it is a super cool pedal. If you need more gain, try the sister pedal - the AC Booster. It apparently picks up in the gain department where the RC left off.

From the looks of your rig in your signature, this pedal would work really well in front of an 808/Menatone Red Snapper type pedal. Look it up at:

Re: Review: XOTIC RC Booster

Lee, I haven't looked at that site yet, but do you know the differences between all his pedals....AC, RC etc? I've been happy with the Klon for a long time, mostly because I like the 'thickening effect' of the pedal and the bouncy feel under the fingers.

One thing the Klon does well is to add smoothness to a gainy signal, and a thicker clean tone to cleans. So, you're saying you like the effect the RC Booster has on your amp, over the Klon? Or, you like it more for it's ability to goose other pedals? Right now, I use the Klon as my cleaner drive, and the T.Rex Mudhoney as my gainmonster OD. It works fine for what I need, but I've heard nothing but good things about the Xotic pedal. Also....how much did you get for your Klon? I'm keeping mine, but I'm just curious.

Joe,

You are right that the Klon adds smoothness to your signal and amp when you run it - a rather pleasing effect I might add. Unfortunately, the RC Booster does not do that. It just adds MORE of your signal (fuzzy, clean or heavy gain), while giving you the ability to better tailor the EQ. It doesn't sound like a Klon at all.

What I didn't like about the Klon is that it thickens up a signal whether you like it or not - you don't have a choice. If you already have a thick signal, the Klon does "to much smoothing and thickening". While that is not necessarily a bad thing, sometimes it was nice to have "just more" of the tone you were already getting....with no color added.

What I like about the RC Booster is its ability to goose other high-end OD pedals into sonic territory whille retaining their original character of the amp and distortion pedal (with just more volume). I had been doing that with my Langraff and Klon, but found that the Klon colored (or thickened) the Landgraff too much...it just didn't work for me. It did the same with my other OD's, too.

Now, don't get me the wrong...the Klon is a great pedal when used with the right equipment. I'm not taking anything away from it at all since it can do wonders with an SLO, Bogner et al. If you get your distortion from the amp, first, and then want a smooth solo tone, the Klon is for you. It does the Warren Haynes "creamy vibe" to the "T". It is really meant to push a distorted amp into a different sonic territory.

On the other end of the spectrum, I rely (mainly) on pedals for my initial distortion stage. I need the RC Booster to push me into solo territory. I like a clean amp, my Langraff for Plexi Crunch and then the RC Booster for solo volume and vibe. Right now, it is working REALLY WELL.

To answer your last question, I sold the Klon in 4 hours for $405....rather simple if you have all the original paperwork.

Hope that helps! If you have a few hundred you can spare, check one out at musictoyz and send it back if you don't like it.

Very Best Regards,

Re: Review: XOTIC RC Booster

Oh, I forgot that the AC Booster has more "Gain" associated with signal. The BB Preamp is like a distortion pedal and takes over where the RC and AC left off.

The AC Booster has been described by many as "creamy" - if that helps at all.

Re: Review: XOTIC RC Booster

I've been gassin for one of these ever since my old guitar teacher showed me it in his rig...wasn't a huge difference...but it just made his rig come alive. Really wantin to try it out with my krank.

Re: Review: XOTIC RC Booster

Thanks for the answer. It's amazing that the resale value of Klons stays really high like that! I like mine, but I know it's just one particular flavor of OD.
I used to buy/sell them a lot more, just because they all do something unique and different, on different amps. I think I stopped after getting the Klon/Mudhoney combo, just because I was finally sinking into it, and felt no need to buy anything else. I've always been interested in the Landgraff, OCD, Menatone Fish Factory, Nick Greer, and Xotic pedals. That stuff becomes more of a 'want' than a 'need' after awhile! I really WANT every pedal Zachary Vex every invented!

Well, the Landgraff is great for pushing clean signals; the OCD is similar in concept (but not really close to the Landgraff); the Fish Factory is good, but knowing you, you'd rather just have the Red Snapper Side....get that pedal on a standalone basis rather than fiddling with the Blue Collar, which is really just an enhanced TS9 with more gain....nice, but not that wonderful with your rig; and, the ZVEX stuff is super cool (no matter how you cut it).

Isn't it cool that we have all these great pedals from which to choose?
