Rhythm Speed - Right Hand

Hey guys,

There are a lot of people asking how to be able to play faster lead. Well I wanna know how to play faster rhythm!

I'm attempting Pantera's Domination and the riff is quite speedy. Any tips on how to get my right hand riffing out fast and accurate?

Re: Rhythm Speed - Right Hand

Practice practice practice.

Try playing along with some other bands like Slayer and Anthrax and early Metallica that have very heavy emphasis on rhythm parts. In particular, work on gallops (like in "Raining Blood") and consistent downpicking (almost any Metallica or Anthrax song, but "Madhouse" and "Master Of Puppets" in particular). With all three of these bands, the fretting positions aren't terribly complex, but the picking is. It makes for good practice.

I'm beginning to subscribe to the theory: Slow down to speed up.

Nail on the head!

Unfortunately it's the only way...

Play it slow till you have it accurate, down to perfection slowly. Any mistakes while playing slow will only get worse when you speed it up. Once you get confident and able to play it slow, pick up the pace a bit. Don't be worried if it takes you ages to get there, you will eventually if you put enough time into it.

yup....

after gettnig something down, you are allways able to play it faster....

also, jerking off actually does increase forearm stregth.....

Re: Rhythm Speed - Right Hand

Another thing I've found helpful is to play straight 8th note power chords and change the accents using palm muting -- essential if you wanna get your heavy riffing down ...

Re: Rhythm Speed - Right Hand

Also great advice. I'm writing up a plan on all your suggestions now. It's riffage time! :p

Re: Rhythm Speed - Right Hand

The faster you want to be, the slower you want to start. The most important thing IMO.

The second most important thing is to GET A METRONOME, if you haven't got one already.

Third, it's always good to record your playing to be able to reflect it properly. Listen to it the next morning, preferably. Don't have anything else on tape, just your own SINGLE guitar take.

I trained to be quite fast (IMO, again) simply with a metronome, without any backing tracks. I think you can't hear yourself enough when training over a record. It's not about training specific tracks, you do that later. I train all down-, up- and alternative picking first slowly, and when it's going perfectly, then up the speed goes. Of course you should sometimes take off and listen to yourself going Master of Puppets at 208, even if it's not perfect, it's fun! Especially when you can actually do that. If you can do that now, I don't know how much you should train more. The next stop could be Slayer's Chemical Warfare at their speed. It's insane! (But I'm working on it, of course.)

Hope I could be of help.

Yeah, a metronome is a good idea, to make sure all that speed is happening at the right times, other than that, practice.

HAILS MAN
I WOULD SAY
PRACTICE SOME EARLY DEICIDE RIFFS, MORBID ANGEL RIFFS AND DEFLESHED/DESTRUCTION RIFFS.
that was my tip for it.
ahahahahahahaha
