Rickenbacker replacement pickups

I did a trade yesterday and wound up with a very cool copy of a Rickenbacker 330 (Jet-Glo). I've been blessed to have had some wonderful guitars over the past 40 years, but a Ricky (or clone) has never been in the picture....first off, I was never that enamored with them and secondly, the opportunity for one never presented itself. Anyway, that changed once I played this beauty!

I have no idea (nor did the owner) of it's history. He said he got it from Fatdog in Berkley and was told a local fella made it and traded it in. The crew there did some updating, etc. It seems to be very high quality. The neck is amazing!

It has toaster size humbuckers on it and they sound pretty good, but I was wondering if there is something else out there better suited for this guitar.

While I'd love to keep it, I have to sell it.....so, is it best to leave it as is or would a different set of pups make it more attractive to somone looking for a Ricky?rick.jpgrick2.jpgrick1.jpgrick.jpgrick2.jpgrick1.jpg

Re: Rickenbacker replacement pickups

Your guitar looks like a Tanglewood copy from the Nineties.

The commercially sensible option is to leave the guitar "as is". Let the buyer chose (and finance) the modifications.

If you are determined to throw money at the guitar, consider this. How do the pickups mount to the body? This will affect your choice of replacement pickups.

My gut reaction is to suggest TV Jones pickups. Even having said this, you will have to be careful to choose the most suitable mounting type.

Re: Rickenbacker replacement pickups

Thanks for a dose of reality Double F. The pickups on it sound just fine and since I'm going to sell it, no reason to re-pup. The pups mount (screw) direct to the body. Played it today during worship and not only did it sound fabulous, it was perfect the way it sat in the mix. It also plays like a dream. A Tanglewood huh? Good to know what it may be and I'll check it out. It's a very cool guitar and if I could, I'd hang on to it.
