Rid rules again!

Cat In The Hatministrator
I received my pedal, which was one of the 3 that Niels generously gave away, yesterday. I knew that he was sending me a Hot Drive & Boost II pedal, which I was really excited about, and couldn't wait to try. Little did I realise exactly what I would receive. I'll quote the letter that Niels enclosed with the pedal.
"Here is your prize!
It is the second pre-tester Plexitone OD, I named them Duplexer, I kept the Dymo stickers on it, thought you might like that. I made this baby in 2004, early January I think it was, This pedal was the revelation for me. It has the same parts as the Plexitone, one LED less as this one is symmetrical in the clip circuit. I used an old HDB Mk2 as base, it is very close to the standard PT. It has a bit more bite, but it is more how I wanted it to be myself and it has one channel as I also had wanted it to have, so you will get it as I first made it, and liked!
Hope that it will serve you well, and bring good times!
Best regards
Niels"
I gave it a first play today, and OMFG what a sound! I think the 2 drive channels on my TSL might have just been made redundant. Big, fat, crisp and transparent drive that just sounds wonderfully open. I put my Jekyll & Hyde in front of it, as I use the Jekyll side as a Tubescreamer, and it sounds colossal! I am now having to rethink how I get my sound, all on the strength of one pedal. I'm thinking of a single channel valve combo, with fx loop, and maybe reverb, and that's it! Be gone channel switcher!
I cannot thank Niels enough for this pedal. We all know he makes stunning products, but to give away a personal prototype is beyond amazing.

Re: Rid rules again!

Heck yeah! Sounds like you got a jewel. I agree about selling the amp, and finding something big and fat. I'd recommend seeking out a Gibson Goldtone or Trace Elliot (same company). They have a great fat tube tone with glorious reverb, and take to OD pedals amazingly well. It's like having a scaled down Vox/Plexi with Fender reverb.

I'll have to have a bit of a think as to which amp would suit me best. Would definitley need an fx loop as I like chorus and delay in the loop. Reverb would be ideal, although a seperate reverb pedal would do. Apart from that....
Time will tell.

Re: Rid rules again!

Naah I'll first pick it up by the 1st, i had some debt which needed to be settled = No cash, but I'll send ya some when i get it.

What was this contest?

Re: Rid rules again!

Ok!
Will look forward to the pics!
It was a contest earlier this summer.
I had only a Plexitone variation up for takes, I ended up giving away 4 pedals:)
And then I still felt that I could have done alittle more.

Re: Rid rules again!

Well, if the pedal he sent me is any indication, you should grab one as soon as you can.

Re: Rid rules again!

Thats great ! I must have completely missed Rid's giveaways , what cool thing to do. I've been wanting to check out a Plexitone for so long but just havent pulled the trigger. I never end up liking pedal OD's as well as my Rivera. But then I havent tried anything as high end as this. I think I know where the is a used one, maybe its time....

Re: Rid rules again!

I heard some of Rids stuff at his house.... They sound GREAT.

Hvad var det den pedal hed Niels, var det død hund eller?

Re: Rid rules again!

i hear ya Stevie...my pedal is absolutely crucial to my tone now and i would be lost without it!

I'm trying to decide which amp would be the perfect partner. I never realised just how fizzy the drive I was getting from my amp til I tried that pedal.

Re: Rid rules again!

mine's going through a blues jr.

amp:
master at about 3-4
volume at around 7
bass at 7-8
treble at 7
mids at 4
reverb at 1 or off
fat switch always on

pedal:
volume about 10 o'clock
cut switch at high noon
gain at about 2 o'clock

Re: Rid rules again!

Are you getting the best of both worlds with the Fender clean, Marshall dirt? I was thinking that a Rivera era Fender might suit, because of the fx loop etc.
