PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE POST BEFORE VOTING!

You are voting for your favorite riff in the Riff-Off TITLE BOUT. More information about the Riff-Off can be found here. This is a very special bout because it determines who will carry the title of Riffologist Supremö. Having won the Title Bout against Tor last month, B2D currently holds the title. This is B2D's third Title Bout! ex-250 looks to make it B2D's last.

The rules for Title Bout submissions remain the same as for regular Riff-Off entries with the added stipulation that the Title Bout riff must be something befitting of a horror movie soundtrack—that is to say it must convey a sense of doom or dread. Tempo, time signature and the like are non-factors. If the riff creeps you out, it's doing its job.

VOTING CLOSES IN 72 HOURS!!!

You've heard the rest of this before, but it bears repeating...

Because not all contestants have access to the same quality of recording equipment, your voting decision should be based first on the actual composition, second on the player's execution of the riff. Try to look past recording quality. Some questions you may want to ask yourself while considering which way to vote: What is the emotional impact of the riff? How original is the riff? Does the riff inspire me? Would I want to hear a whole song built off this riff?

Note that each contestant has chosen a battle name for the Riff-Off; their identities have been hidden from all other contestants and the voting public, and will be revealed at the end of the Riff-Off, when a champion is crowned.

Lastly, while comments are strongly encouraged, please realize that each contestant put personal time and creative energy into his or her submission. If you have any critique to provide in this thread, give the contestants the courtesy of making it constructive. This competition is built on the premises of fun and musical growth.

Here are the links to each clip in this battle:

Riff A

Riff B

As you can see, each riff remains anonymous until the poll closes. Which riff belongs to B2D and which one belongs to ex-250? Shuddup and vote!

If you run into any technical issues or have other questions regarding the Riff-Off, contact me via email (kgmessier at gmail dot com).

Have fun!

Ughh.. Detuned stuff! Not my thing.

That said, both have a very cool vibe- A is very "sabbath". B has a creepy "atmosphere" to it- Kinda like MOP era Hetfield which I like.

Going with B

Re: Riff-Off TITLE BOUT: B2D vs. ex-250

Both are good for their own interpretation of the theme, but B creeps me out more.

Re: Riff-Off TITLE BOUT: B2D vs. ex-250

the riffs have their name in the tags (well one of them does so far)

edit - just riff A

Re: Riff-Off TITLE BOUT: B2D vs. ex-250

A is very Sunn O)))-like, which I really, really dig.

B is very cool indeed too. Good composition.

I am gonna think a little bit more on this, but initially, I have a slightly better feel for the A riff.

Re: Riff-Off TITLE BOUT: B2D vs. ex-250

dug 'em both.

A was more aligned with the contest theme for me (not that it would have to be a heavy riff to be scary, but in terms of versus B). B was actually kind of soothing for me, and made me think of what it'd be like eating peyote in the desert somewhere. I guess that could take a scary turn, but you know what I mean, hehe.

ex-250 looks to make it his last
??? Did you really mean to write this dude off as a one time winner? :)

Riff A would suit a real sadistic gore-fest of a queezer, but Riff B was more sinister to my ears and had more tension.

Good work lads!

Re: Riff-Off TITLE BOUT: B2D vs. ex-250

They both were on the same level to me. I had to vote for B because it had a little bit more emotion. It struck me as being eerie and creepy.

Re: Riff-Off TITLE BOUT: B2D vs. ex-250

Both are great. They fit the theme perfectly in their own way.

I can see Riff A going with a modern remake of a classic 70s suburban slasher like Halloween or Friday the 13th or even Nightmare.

Riff B sounds like it would fit The Hills Have Eyes, Texas Chainsaw, or a remake of The Duel - that slightly Southwestern/desert/Country Twang. Maybe even a Tarantino slasher like Dusk Til Dawn, or Maximum Overdrive. It evokes the shimmering Summer desert heat with the waves coming off the blacktop and not enough wind to move a tumbleweed.

Walking through the ghost town. That kinda thing.

Hmmmmmm....

Re: Riff-Off TITLE BOUT: B2D vs. ex-250

Nice work guys!

Both riffs "did their job"....to me A was more evil while B was creepier

....hold me:crying:

Re: Riff-Off TITLE BOUT: B2D vs. ex-250

Woohoo, very cool round! Man, both are cool and both are powerful.
I chose riff B, since the concept and the End are grabbing me.
Cheers to you bot for the amazing riffage!

I was having the same impression. Or maybe that they are both movements from the same film: Riff B sounds like the anticipatory music (i.e. something's about to happen) and Riff A reminded me of the violence music (i.e. monster chasing/killing someone). Both very good entries.

Riff B also brought to mind Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight for some reason.

Re: Riff-Off TITLE BOUT: B2D vs. ex-250

i am glad i listened to riff b during daylight hours with others around the office

if i had waited to listen to it until tonight when i am the last one here, i would be very creeped out

Re: Riff-Off TITLE BOUT: B2D vs. ex-250

Riff B creeps me out. Riff A was good, but just sounded "metal" not "horror film" to my ears.

I'm going for B

Re: Riff-Off TITLE BOUT: B2D vs. ex-250

Nice job. Riff B is my kind of fun. :bigok: I love the vibrato effect, and I'm not sure if anyone else caught it, but the noises at the end are great!

Re: Riff-Off TITLE BOUT: B2D vs. ex-250

dang A, it's just me and 3 others right now! don't lose hope!

Re: Riff-Off TITLE BOUT: B2D vs. ex-250

I feel like the two criteria are at odds with one another. I think Riff A (which I think was ex-250, by the way) better fit a horror movie. But I like Riff B a little bit better. It reminded me in tone and feel of the main riff in This Love from Pantera. And I think the clean licks that Dimebag laid down were some of the most emotion-invoking in metal.

I like B better overall, but I don't think it fits the theme as well as A. I haven't looked at the results yet, but the previous post seems to indicate that A is not doing as well. I wish I would not have read that, to be honest. Still, based on the fact that I think Riff A satisfies the more important criterion better, it gets my vote.
