Rip-off or decent deal?

Re: Rip-off or decent deal?

You all think its a rip-off, aren't you? But lot of guys here pimp up their Epis and throw away the old parts. Then you need 150 bucks for pups, hardware, decent tuners and so on.
So, were is difference??

The condition.

My first electric was an Epi Dot. I replaced the pickups with SDs and then sold the Epi ones on ebay for about half the price of the new pickups. I replaced the bridge and sold it on ebay for about half the price of the new bridge (used tonepros). I sold the Epi tuners on ebay for about half the value of the replacement Gotoh ones . . . and in the end I do have a great playing, sounding guitar. I love this guitar and will likely never part with it.

Would I ever do it all over again though? No way. I should have kept the guitar stock and sold it, saved up all the money that I spent on parts and put it towards a new guitar. That would have put me in the price range of some lower end Gibsons . . . which at least would hold some kind of resale value, should the need to get rid of it ever arise.

If the body was in like-new condition, then I might consider it. That one looks like it's been used for a snowboard. $220 American for that body, $150 for parts, and (I guess) another $200 for a halfway decent refinish = a brand new Epi, or a well cared for, entry-level used LP.

+1. For what it'd cost to get that guitar fully-equipped and looking good, you could just buy a new one. Used mid-price imports are only a deal if: 1) they're in very good condition, 2), they're priced well below retail, or 3) they have some expensive upgrades that aren't reflected in the selling price. There's plenty of used guitars that fall into at least one of these categories.

Which is exactly why I didn't think it was that good of a deal in the first place, have just never shopped LP's before.

ps - the part about it looking like it was used for a snowboard was pretty priceless. Might even be signatureable :biglaugh: It is in sad@$$ condition. $100-150 less and I probably would, just to have it as a beater, no refinish, but ~meh~. Way too much $$.

Will just save it and put it towards a Warmoth, do it right the first time.

Re: Rip-off or decent deal?

I've got three ESP EC-400s that fill my LP need currently. The cheapest (and my favorite) is my gold top AT model. I paid $325 for it on Ebay. It KILLS the Epi LP that I owned for a short time. Plus, they come with the JB/59 combo, Earvana compensated nut, and Grover tuners.

With Epi's, a PU upgrade is mandatory, but after that, & a little tweaking and a good set up, they can hold their own. I've got some very good sounding Epi LP's. If you want one that sounds great out of the box, then you need to get an Epi that comes with Gibson PU's, or get an ESP.
