Rocktron Austin Gold OD

Re: Rocktron Austin Gold OD

Go to Rocktron's website, they have a audio clip on it. I've never played through one but from what I hear it's the poor man Klon. Now that's a big/bold statment and I have no idea if it can back it up.

Re: Rocktron Austin Gold OD

I have become a fan of rocktron because of the Distortion Planet and Nirto Boost pedals, they make quality stuff....quiet and true bypass, I dont know about that perticular pedal, but you can believe their ads ,I would be willing to bet if they say it dont color the sound then it dont.

Re: Rocktron Austin Gold OD

I've heard shoot outs with the Austin Gold and a few other booteek pedals and the Austin Gold sounds pretty darned good, especially with it's cheap price tag. The differences in tone, if any, are pretty negligible when you compare $40 to $400.

Re: Rocktron Austin Gold OD

I have one... woohoo! I actually know the answer to this question. And the answer is: if it's the poor man's Klon then I don't want a Klon.

A friend of mine has a japanese TS and it has a much finer, smoother 'tooth' than the AG. The AG has a bit of solid state spatter or fizz to the OD. The advantages?

1) No huge mid hump. It's quite flat and can be used for a nice boost.
2) Bass cut control. It's set at just the right frequency to counteract tube mush. Very, very useful in the search for tight rock 'n roll crunch.
3) Combines with tube distortion well and records well. Something about the attack feels a bit off when I'm playing through it, but the extra whatever-it-is really blends into the overall sound and gives it a nice edgy saturation. I know you don't want too polite of an OD or you won't cut through, and this pedal seems to make up for that.
