S.D. did it again. Now what?

I installed a set of Whole Lotta Humbuckers (WLH) in my Les Paul. The guitar sounds incredible! I'm not switching these out. Now I need advice on my two remaining humbucker armed guitars. Here's what I've got right now:

Gibson LP - with WLHs
Gibson ES-339 - ?
Gibson SG - ?

Recommendations for the 339 and/or SG?
Should mention that the type of music I play is classic rock, rock, and blues.

For the SG, maybe a pair of DMZ 36Anniversay pickups. Have a pair in a SG and really like them. They are good PAF's and seem to sit, for me, between the SD Jazz and WLH pickups.

Now what? Now you get a pair of Seth Lovers and put them in the ES339.

Re: S.D. did it again. Now what?

You might want to check out or call Bill at Electric City Pickups. I talked to him and he suggested a pair of "Freedom Pickups". I just got the bridge and put it in my SG '61 R.I. ($140.00) and they are huge! And bright. Think they are would pretty hot at 8.5, and they are wound with an A4 Mag (my favorite).
I still love my Seth L.'s W/A4 mag, these are like the ECP that Bill makes but Bill's pups are like Seth Lovers on Steroids.
They "sound" as far as my ears tell me-twice as loud, but that is just what my ears say. They are probably only 1/4 or 1/3 louder. The reason I go on about Bill is that most of his great pups are wallet friendly, and when I spoke to him he suggested maybe the Duncan WLH would be good also. He knew before I told him I had a Duncan, so he was right, and when, after a long talk, that I swapped mags he said A4. Right again. He will tell you if he thinks another pickup brand would be better for for you.
He's terribly smart and super friendly and generous with his knowledge, as close as he can be with out giving way a couple secrets. If you do call him, please say hi from Steve Buffington, in Tacoma, Wa.

Re: S.D. did it again. Now what?

id put wlh's in everything!

That would work. I know Beaubrummels has the WLH set in his SG and from what he says it is a great match. I am seriously considering a set for mine. I would be ecstatic if the tone would even come close to my Paul with the WLH set.

Re: S.D. did it again. Now what?

In the sg you could put a pair of 59s in them, or maybe a custom 5 59 combo, or if you want something slightly more aggressive a custom and a jazz.

Re: S.D. did it again. Now what?

gibson175,
Please tell me, I got a monster bridge from ECP, in my SG, is the neck WLH nice and bright sounding, or is it less bright than a SH-2 Jazz, only a lot louder.
The SH-2 Jazz Neck is the brightest neck pup I've found, love it's sound, but I sure could use it louder and just as bright, or louder and brighter HB. This could help the OP maybe also. Any suggestions, I know it is a long shot question.
Thank You,
SJ

Re: S.D. did it again. Now what?

I'd definitely put Seths in the semi as suggested.

You could go for a c/59 in the SG bridge posi, with maybe a PG neck. Gives a separate flavour to each guitar.

Re: S.D. did it again. Now what?

id go seths in the 339 and 59 neck/custom 5 bridge in the sg. youll have three guitars with their own personalities but all will still work for those genres and get great tone

Re: S.D. did it again. Now what?

Right on! Seths in to ES339...

If I were you, I'd entertain the idea of putting PhatCat's into that SG of yours... SG's with p90's sound great... But then again, there is the hum issue, and I dunno how much gain you're using and what kind music you are into.

Re: S.D. did it again. Now what?

I play the same types of music as you do.

P-90s sound sooo good in an SG. Don't pass over that idea. I really like the sound of GFS Mean 90s in my SG (I also have a Mean 90 in one of my LPs) and they are never coming out. I also love the sound of a C8 (any Custom with an A8 magnet) in the bridge of an SG. That's a sound made in heaven.

For the 339, there are many great choices...
WLH,
Seths,
A2P,
P-90s,
P-Rails

Re: S.D. did it again. Now what?

Update

I had Lollar Low Wind pickups in the 339. I put in the Seth Lovers based on everyone's recommendation and it was exactly what the doctor ordered. Great recommendation! Great pickups for this guitar!

I kept the WLH's in the LP and they are still great. Love the sound with overdrive.

As for the SG...Based on everyone's recommendation I put in the 59 SH-1 and the Duncan Custom SH-5 combo. To me, that combo was too bright for that guitar. I ended up selling the pickups. With that in mind, and knowing what tones I've liked thus far (Seth's & WLH's), what should I put in the SG?

Given what you play, a Seth Lover set for the Es335, and a 59 neck and Custom 5 bridge (with and UOA5 Magnet swapped into it) for the SG.
