This is his stage rig that he used at the time the album was done. His pedalboard setup is very different now and of course he has a few new guitars and his JSX amp in the mix. He used a 535Q for wah on that song. I don't know what amp he used but he's prone to using Wells, Cornford, Soldano, Bogner, Fender Bassman, and a '69 Marshall in the studio as well. From what I know about the amps used on his latest albums I think Love Thing might be the Wells.

Re: satch tone?

thanks! im thinking of getting one of his sjsx amps if my bank acount will stretch...
shurly he uses walls of effects pedals and things to get that killer tone?

Re: satch tone?

I suggest you listen to Satch live in san fransisco followed by His set on The G3 Live In Denver DVD.. He uses Marshalls on San Fransisco and the JSX on the G3 in Denver.

IMO unless theres something seriously gone wrong with the mixing of G3 his tone has really gone downhill since the use of the JSX
My 2cents but check 'em out.

Re: satch tone?

ey gads!
so this rediculous signituar amp, with its huge price tag, is infact not as good as a good old marshall!
damn peavy!

Re: satch tone?

I dunno Stevo, I admit even though I am a huge Satch fan I don't always like the tone he gets, but when I saw him at G3 this year his tone, especially his neck pup tone was very good!

Re: satch tone?

Go and drop $3000 on the Satch Ibanez, $2000 on the Peavey JSX, and then shave your head.... With $5000 and a Chrome Dome, you can sound EXACTLY like Satch!!!!! :laugh2:

Re: satch tone?

don't forget to add in the DS-1 and wah pedals, and chorus pedals, and delay, and then do all the mods he has done to his pedals...
Then You Rock On :smoker:

Come on, those prices are way high, My dealer has JSX heads for $1100 and the guitar is closer to $2000

Shred_me, $1100 is hardly expensive for a tube amp.

Re: satch tone?

Waaait up. The G3 DVD DID NOT have the JSX being used. You can clearly see they are XXX's, the guts being modified, because they were prototypes being tested on the road for the JSX, so you can't decide based on that one example.

I know since getting the JSX, his pedalboard has changed alot. Someone posted a pic of Satch and Vai's new pedalboards a while ago, but I can't find it anymore. I do know that a Zakk Wylde OD was on it, though. The DS-1 had disappeared, too

Whoa.... No DS-1, that's crazy, I think it's a good idea. I've used the Zakk Wylde Pedal and DS-1s are pretty useless unless they are modded.

As usual, I seem to be odd man out - I like the tone with the red guitar played on The Extremist the best of any Satch tone I can remember. The tone on the solo section is about my all-time favorite, I can listen to that over and over. IMHO his tone is way better than Malmsteen's or Vai's on that DVD.

This is bullsh1t.

I hate the recently fashionable idea of saying that the 'tone comes from the fingers... maaaaaaannnnnnnnn'. No, the notes come from the fingers, to nauces of picking technique and so on... the TONE comes from the gear. If it were all about the fingers then every pro would be playing shltty squier strats through 5w solid state practice amps.

This idea has been around since the dawn of time. Not exactly "recently fashionable" by any stretch. Of course gear matters but there is reason Petrucci sounds like Petrucci no matter what he is using.

Talking solely about tone. There is absolutely no way that say... James Hetfield would get the tone like anything on any of the metallica albums if he was forced to use David Gilmour's gear. And B.B. King would not get the tone he has if he was using Zakk Wylde's rig.

I'd love to hear David Gilmour through Hetfield's rig. :) I imagine that man can make any rig sing.

Re: satch tone?

I agree and disagree, I think any good player will sound good through any decent rig but a really good player will sound great through any rig with or without distortion. Hetfield wouldn't sound like Metallica thorugh Gilmours rig but hes not exactly a virtuoso player either.

If you take someone like Petrucci or Gilbert and plug them into a pignose they will still shred your nuts off. In the end its in the skill of the player to sound good through any gear, but tone I agree comes from the amp not the fingers.

Re: satch tone?

All you need is a nice tube Marshall type amp, a Boss DS-1, and a two humbucker Strat type guitar, maybe with Duncan Pearly Gates pickups...and lots of talent and practice.

Re: satch tone?

I consider the "tone" from gear to be more along the lines of "timbre". Sort of like a violinist wanting his instrument to be made of a specific wood, etc. I think it's fairly easy to see that Satch sounds the way he does because of his style. His pick attack, his raunchy bends, slurred legato, etc. The gear just gives him the color he desires, IMO.

The rolling head shoulda been an indicator as to the humor within this response. In fact the target for the humor was the Chrome Dome......

If ya wanna go that route, the JSX HEAD MSRPS at $1499. Add $750 MSRP for the XXX 412 CAb, and you break the $2000 dollars quoted originally. My roomate while I attended the Atlanta Institute of Music purchased his Satch Ibanez for $2800. Granted it was a few years ago, but these were no means exagerations, merely the MSRP and a little hairdo humor!
