Say HI to Spanky!

One of my guys brought me a Chinese Tele body that weighed around a pound and a half, an old Peavey Nitro neck, and a set of G&L locking tuners. What could I do for cheaps? I put a Wilkinson bridge on it, a couple Bill Lawrence units, and some spare hardware to make it all fit. My gawd, this is fun to play! And it sounds fantastic. The neck unit sounds full, open, and deep - great for chords or single notes, both units on have a great R'n'B tone or country twang, and the bridge pickup has plenty of meat - but it's sharp like a knife! I keep having to turn the tone down because it's so trebly. A little neck heavy, but during play it's not a problem. If I crank up the gain, it squeals a bit if you get too close to the amp. Played it through my phone and the owner can't wait to pick it up on Saturday.

Cool build! Love the Bill Lawrences!

If it's a little neck-divey on a strap, you can slightly counter that by moving the bottom strap button a couple inches closer to the forearm side. It's not drastic, but it might be all you need to balance out a Tele.

Nice. I like that color. BTW, what do you mean by "played it through your phone?" Is that some app?

Thanks, I like the distressed satin orange that the body was painted. With a black pickguard I thought it might look too "Halloweeny", but it comes off more weird Gretsch than anything else.

My flip phone has no apps... Seriously, though - all I did was call the dude and say "check this out" while running through a couple sounds. He said it sounded so good he almost peed his pants.

Got a testimonial from the client today on the Bill Lawrences... (I told him he'd love them).

"These Bill Lawrence pickups are very interesting. I've never played anything quite like them. When playing through some typical overdrive settings, it's crunchy, but still very clear. Each note of a chord is clearly defined. I love it."
