School me on 25 watt Greenbacks

Re: School me on 25 watt Greenbacks

I'm looking at pulling the trigger on a G12M to sit alongside the G12H Anniversary I bought recently...:)

Re: School me on 25 watt Greenbacks

I'm thinking of buying a Blackstar HT5r combo and replacing the stock speaker with a Greenback. The stock speakers blow. The only way to get a good tone when playing through them is to use high output pickups. PAF's sound okay clean, but a bit muffled and undefined when using overdrive. I read on the Blackstar forum that someone did this and it sounded phenomenal.

Re: School me on 25 watt Greenbacks

I have finally settled on G12M25's in my 4x12. They are not coming out. For 1x12's or anything open backed I like the G12H. Mixing a G12M with a G12H in a 2x12 sounds like a good idea to me.

Re: School me on 25 watt Greenbacks

have you seen these?

other than that, marshall were making a 4x12 box with greenbacks recently that were reasonably priced, IMO; they'd probably be the chinese ones, but for a new closed-back box full of fresh greenbacks i would take the punt (if i didn't already have 2 quads and no work, heh heh)

Re: School me on 25 watt Greenbacks

I agree 100% with that statement! The Greenback sounds awful by itself.

I don't think they sound awful at all but I do think that if liked 2 or 4 Greenbacks in a closed back cab and then tried a single Greenback in an open back combo you might be a tad let down...

I agree. The G12M is a quality speaker but lacks bass in an open back combo amp like a Deluxe Reverb.

Two is a different thing altogether and sounds much fuller. Used to have a pair in an AC30.

But the G12M sounds best in a larger, sealed 4 x 12 cab like a Marshall bottom where the speakers seem to excite and reinforce each other.

My Top Hat, Club Royale sounds stale through it's Greenback. I had another amp that was the same way. Both amps sound good through other speakers. I'm thinking about swapping the Greenback out of the Top Hat with the G12H that's in my Bogner 1x12" cabinet. I'll probably reload the Bogner cabinet with a Celestion, Blue!

Re: School me on 25 watt Greenbacks

HOLY MOTHER OF GREENBACK Batman!!!!!! I installed the Greenback tonight and cannot believe how amazing it sounds in the Silvertone 1482. It is like lifting the blanket off the stock speaker! It doesnt change the root tone/vibe of the amp. It sounds just like a 1482 should with, but with perfected bass and highs. It doesnt "add" bass nor is it spikey in the highs.

I love it! Thanks guys.

Re: School me on 25 watt Greenbacks

I have a Marshall 1960 ax paired with my Komet. When I bought the Komet I had borrowed cab for it and eventually replaced it with the ax. The cab I was using was a peavey with 4 shefeilds -1290's. it sounds really good with the peavey. The 1290's are peaveys version of a Cedtion 75w speaker. When I switched the the greenies it was like night and day. The amp just became more organic and harmonically richer. With the right amount ov volume I can make any note bloom into beautiful harmonics. This speaker is absolutely the right speaker for this amp. Fwiw I have the Chinese versions of the greenbacks. They are fine

Re: School me on 25 watt Greenbacks

The one I got was a Chinese and sounds great. I am very pleased with it:

Re: School me on 25 watt Greenbacks

Lew, it absolutely is the best sounding $200 amp I have ever owned. Even now that it is a $297 amp, it slays anything you could buy new for that kinda dough! Folks that have never heard one would be blown away if they played this one. It sounds THAT good!

Re: School me on 25 watt Greenbacks

If greenbacks are your thing you owe it to yourself to check out weber legacy speakers they are designed to recreate the holy grail celestion greenback speakers of the past.

I think they are a tremendous improvement over any current production chinese celestion (yes i have tried them) the benefit of weber is they are a small american made company that builds every speaker to order.

I think I paid about $200 for my pair of legacys they are some of my favorite speakers at any pricepoint.

The 1225 is also a great gb option and can be made in alnico or ceramic.

Maybe what has been posted about them by themselves is the issue Im seeing... I have always heard the rage/hype etc about the greenbacks for years and MUCH of my fav music has been recorded on them. So.. I changed the speaker on my PV classic 30, I said lets try a Private Jack. (greenback facsimile) The tone is MUCH improved over stock, but it seems kinda woolly. very much like in this Vid: http://youtu.be/IwD9rmQDy_A
Its not bad, but just seems to overly dark or non dynamic maybe?? Is it cuz I have one and its open back or ???? Id love to blast one of my heads thru a loaded 4x12 to see, but Id be too afraid to buy 4 for a cab...

Don't even get me started on Weber "Legacy" speakers...

Yep, in closed back multi-speaker cab they are at their best. The G12H30's heavier magnet helps in an open back single speaker configuration.

To me, the Greenback isn't wooly or overly dark. But it does lack a little bass, compared to other Celestions, in an open back cabinet. It sounds real good, but lacks a little bass. Two sound much better than one.

Where the Greenback sounds GREAT is in a 4 x 12 sealed Marshall bottom where the bass frequencies radiating off of the back of the speakers cannot reach and cancel the bass frequencies radiating off of the front of the speakers.

Also, the four speakers cause each other to resonate each other and that deepens and thickens the tone too.
