From a Metallica interview:
James' main concern in the studio, it seems, is getting a good rhythm guitar sound in the first place. "After I've got my guitar sound how I want it, the rest is pretty easy! On Load we got away from the scooped sound on The Black Album by getting some more mids going. If you've got a scooped sound you have to turn it right up, because all the apparent loudness - as they call it - is in the mids, which is where the guitar frequency is supposed to be.

Crap. IMO.
St. Anger has the best tones i've heard from Metallica. Raw and ballsy.
And Kirk doesn't play any more sucky solos!

btw...the black album for me is the best sounding record ever (at least on guitars) so if it´s a clasical scooped sound, that means that scooped mids can be mixed well on a band situation (the thing is how much do you have/want to spend on equipment to sound like that XD)

I use middy as well as scooped sounds, it depends on the situation. Though I agree about Black Album.

I like Metallica a lot I have all the albums etc...I like LOAD and RELOAD that many people didn't like them. But St.Anger is the worse by far. On music and sound either. Just me.

GP: what was different about the black album than previously?
JH: well for one thing bob rock had us bring up the midrange on our amps!LOL!
we used to use zero midrange and he told up that to get a "bigger" sound is by using a decent amount of mids instead of hardly any.
