Screaming Demon on Neck position

Hi guys,

I got a suggestion to use the Demon on neck position.
My guitar has a mahogany body and a Duncan Distortion on bridge.

I'm looking for a pickup with good bass and high ends and great harmonics.

What's your opinion about SD in neck position and about how it'll work together to DD?

The screamin demon is bright, articulate and fairly low output so it should work. Whether it works well depends on a couple of things though. Do you play predominantly on the neck, is the amp bright enough to put it in the neck position and do you have a powerful/dark bridge position pickup?

I dig it in my tele paired with a STL-2. It can balance well. It's all a matter of tweaking the height, really.

I really like it in the neck of my SG, it's there to stay. It fits your description to a "T".

I had a SD in the neck of my Epi LP its was the perfect pup for that neck slot, I then tried a PG1n and now has a jazz, but I would put the SD back in without hesitation if I still had it. For my tastes it beat out the Pearly Gates and Jazz neck....'nuff said

One more question.

My guitar is equiped with a Gotoh Floyd Rose.

Should I purchase TB12 or SH12 for neck position?

The Demon is good in the neck of Les Pauls that are too undefined in the neck position.

Another good option is the APH1 bridge with A5 magnet.

I'm assuming you rarely play with a clean tone...right? Doesn't seem like anyone who plays clean would want a bridge pickup for the neck position.

Anyways, for the neck position the polepiece spacing of the SH12 should be perfect. Save the TB12 for the bridge position.

that's not completely true. i've bot a bridge phat cat in my neck and it sounds great. really fat and articulate with a bit of chime, and it still matches well with a high output bridge despite the fact that it hardly drives my amp.

The Demon in the neck gives great clean sounds, including fingerpicking.

Will work GREAT together in mahogany. I had this setup in a Gibson SG Standard and a similar setup Demon neck and PATB-2 Distortion bridge in a Peavey T-60 hehe. Worked well together and the Screaming Demon in the neck is one of my favorite duncan neck pickups for fusion/rock/metal whatever.

Lew I have had better luck with bridge pickups in the neck than actual neck pickups in the neck. Ironic huh? I am saying this broad based over many types of guitars and body woods IMO. The Screamin Demon is one of the best neck pickups that is clear, tight and powerful without being too harsh for clean playing. Kind of reminds me of a more powerful Full Shred neck only hotter and a little more character to it.

That's different. Except for using alnico 2 instead of alnico 5 the bridge Phat Cat is wound to roughly the same specs as all vintage 50's Gibson P-90's.

It's the neck Phat Cat that's underwound.

Same is true of the Duncan Antiquity, Pearly Gates and 59: the bridge pickup is the vintage accurate model and the neck model is underwound compared to vintage.

Cool! I've never tried a SD as a neck pickup. Never tried a JB as a neck pickup either although alot of guys seem to like it.

My Hamer Monoco came factory stock with a Duncan Custom as the neck and Duncan Custom Custom as the bridge. Loved the CC but I found the 14.4K Custom to be cool for solos but a little muddy when used as a neck pickup when I played jazzy chords and I changed it to a Seth Lover neck model. Much cleaner!

I do tend to think that since most guys here play with a distorted tone most of the time that most are not looking for a clean tone from the neck pickup. I did a poll here one time and the majority of players here are rockers who use distortion most of the time regardless of whether playing lead or rhythm.

I'm sure not knocking that - I like to play that way myself from time to time. It's fun!

Lew, I play my Demon mostly clean in that tele. I set it up to play split most of the time for a good standard tele neck tone. When full on, it makes my tele's neck spot sound like an archtop. Great for Wes style octaves.
