Re: SD-1 vs. OD-3

The SD-1 is the classic Boss overdrive. Sort of like a Tubescreamer with a bit more crunch. It has pushed mids and a bit of bass roll-off. It is an OVERDRIVE not a distortion pedal. It has more than enough gain for me, but metal players may want more saturation if going through a clean amp.

The OD-3 is Boss's attempt to create an overdrive that doesn't lose low end, yet isn't a "metal" pedal.

I say it succeeds. What bothered me about it (through my rig) is that it pushes TOO much bass. You kick it on and it's like "wooooaaaaah". And you can't dial it out. You can boost the tone control, but that just brightens it, so in a way it becomes a "scooped sound", but not in a thrash metal way. More like a crankin' Marshall way.

Listen to the opening chords of "Makin Love" by Kiss. That's the tone.

The OD-3 I think is more similar to a modded DS-1 than to the SD-1.

I personally prefer the SD-1 because it f*cks with my sound less. It is much more transparent.

I sold the OD-3, still have the SD-1, but don't really use it as I go with true bypass stuff mostly these days. The Fulldrive 2 and Sparkle Drive are on my board right now.....

Peace. :D

sd-1 and tubescreamer have similar levels of gain IIRC, but the diode clipping is symettrical in one and asymettical in the other.. its a different 'feel' of gain, but the SD-1 comes across as slightly grittier and more aggressive.. i love my MIJ one :)

and in response to the OD-3/SD-1 question, the SD-1 still comes across as the more aggressive and rocky than the OD-3.. i had a band practice with a 50w JMP halfstack, and i was using the MIJ strat into the SD-1 with it.. classic rock heaven guys, i wish i'd recorded it for you..

I like the OD-3. It really works well on the clean channel of my amp to produce that nice, "breakup" tone.

Personally, I see it as an improvement of the OD-1 which eats too much of the bass and could have a bit more gain when needed. I prefer it to the SD-1.

Re: SD-1 vs. OD-3

it depends what you're after i guess - the OD pedals are nice for the warm, smooth breakup sound, but the SD-1 is a grittier, drier, less bassy kind of drive. i like it because it cuts through very musically in a band (not harsh at all), and gives you some of the proper old school AC/DC type tones when set low, as well as some beautiful BSSM era RCHP singlecoil sounds..

Re: SD-1 vs. OD-3

Well I already have a tube screamer. It works amazingly for the Phish stuff. I'm looking for something more full and biting. But not thrashy. I don't want something similar to the tube screamer, I want something that will give me a nice Marshall stack tone for heavier classic rock and stuff. So is that the OD-3? What about the SD-2? That thing seems rather interesting.

Get a marshall jackhammer pedal...
