I have heard about Ed Roman ( a.k.a. the Les Vegas Leprechaun = stores in CT and Vegas) doing this before. He actually does modify them, but if he does not have the correct ones to mod, he will paint a CC plate black and ship it out. I know this as a FACT!!!!
You´ve been to his workshop and seen him do this, with your own eyes? Or you worked for him?? I´m just curious, as most luthiers (and esp. a scam artist) would NEVER let anyone see them do something like that, because it would destroy the business, SD could even sue him for that if it were true.....
I DO know for a fact about some of his counterfeits, notably BCRIch´s (´70s USA Ironbird w/maple top, ROFLMAO!!!! Even Neal moser loves to laugh about that one)) and PRS´s, and I don´t doubt that he WOULD just paint a CC black. Not one bit do I doubt it.
But stating that he DOES without presenting hard proof could actually get YOU into trouble. If you can´t prove that statement beyond doubt (PHoto, not "his word against mine"), that constitutes libel, a criminal act punishable by fine and/or imprisonment, because in this case it´s VERY obvious that the intent behind it is to damage his reputation and business. And the Internet is far less anonymous that most people think, i think the RIAA is doing a great job of proving that. Seriously, I kid you not, if I were to read something like that about my shop,
true or not, and know that it´s impossible for you to prove, my lawyers would have a field day, and you´d have a lawsuit to get out of. Ed´s are far more aggressive, sometimes it helps to tread a bit lighter
He is a scam artist to BEWARE OF. If you have ever ventured out to Vegas, or are fortunate enough to live close by, you might have ventured into his store.
As you surely know, there is NO "venturing into the store", it´s either locked or he´s expecting you because you have an appointment.
It is the store where the guitars are marked up 5 times in value, and you almost cannot try the guitar unless you buy it first. Also trying to get some assistance in that place is a friggin' joke.
For the most part true, even if somewhat exaggerated (double price is more like it, at least when I was in there last Spring)
Ed Roman believes that since he has rubbed shoulders with a few greats in his time, that we should support him for the rest of his life by purchasing his crap at over inflated prices.
NO, he just knows which customers he can live off easily and comfortably, and prefers those. JUST LIKE EVERY BUSINESSMAN. Rockstars and Vegas Highrollers are his calling, not normal players. And to be honest, If I had had my shop in Vegas, I´d probably run it quite similar, because the idea is to keep the scum and deadbeats OUT, not invite them IN to potentially destroy 2.5M$ worth of inventory that they´ll never buy anyway.... :yell:
I understand your feelings fine, I´ve dealt w/ Ed before and likely wouldn´t again. I´m not here to defend him, If you don´t like him, that´s your business, and I´m the last person that would try to change that....
But SD has also been VERY clear that they will NOT stand for bashing of Ed as long as he´s a dealer in good standing and is not here to defend himself. A little respect towards this, at least with regard to accusations (as challenged above) that neither you nor anyone else can confirm nor prove, is I think in order. Again, I´m far from an ER fan, but I AM a member of the SD forum, bound to the rules the Seymour Duncan Company sets. And Evan has made VERY clear ( last time IIRC im June) how the topic of dealers and Ed Roman in particular should be handled....
I´m not trying to lay into you, I´m truly sorry if it comes off that way. But I DO think you´re seeing it quite one-sidedly (and maybe going off a BIT too hard), and I think I can help you to see the other side
Peace
