Re: SD Custom Shop humbuckers you want to be Regular Production Humbuckers

I know this is an OLD post in an OLD thread that was recently resurrected...

But what're the Hetfield specs of the AH1?

See below. The link is to the thread of BleedingEdge's replica of Hetfield's KEA white V.

Just to follow up, the pickups arrived some time ago. They are Alnico Vs. Bridge pickup is over 17k, and the neck is 7.7k. Apparently the neck was just there for show with James anyway...

JB actually, with double Fillisters and an A2 mag.

Nope. This is from a person that works directly from Allan.

Seems he did use the JB2 in the 80s, but it was way too hot for him, so he has been refining since.

Re: SD Custom Shop humbuckers you want to be Regular Production Humbuckers

Well he may be using that now (thank you for the update), but the classic AH pup (around here) was always known as the JB.

A quote from the same guy.

"if you ask for the 'Allan Holdsworth Pickup', you'll get the double screw JB style wind (15K) which is twice the strength. I have students who do this all the time and are very disappointed. "

I would point out though that a '59 (or JB) with just double screw coils is a shop floor custom, and is the regular price. Changing the wind however, is a true custom shop pickup.

*EDIT* I just remembered something that makes total sense now that read about AH using the '59.

I wanted a JB based pup for my JEL build, and when I ordered the pup I called it the "AH model" expecting the A2 JB based pup. What I received was a '59 based model, and I always thought it was a screw up. Now I am thinking I may have both versions of the AH pup. :D

Wow! That is very cool. How do you compare them? His sound is a difficult one- it is so connected to his technique. But it always has this reedy thing going on.

Couldn't tell ya, I never installed the '59 version. :laugh2:

I still have it, and I am sure it will get used at some point.

Re: SD Custom Shop humbuckers you want to be Regular Production Humbuckers

I'd like to see the AH-1 Allan Holdsworth pick-up brought back...awesome pick-up!

Re: SD Custom Shop humbuckers you want to be Regular Production Humbuckers

Since this has been dug up, I'd like to add the 78 model.

There are some others of interest, but having not played them yet, I can't speak as to if they would be viable outside of how I 'think' they might sound.

Edit: would be willing to throw the Dokken humbucker in there. Finds a happy medium between the JB and the DD that seems to put the best of both in one package.

My opinion is that before any of this, BachToRock's '59/Jazz' neck hybrid should become a production model.

+1

I was just thinking that the 59/Jazz hybrid neck humbucker is the one that should become a production model.
It's time for some hybrid humbuckers production.

Re: SD Custom Shop humbuckers you want to be Regular Production Humbuckers

Id also prefer hybrids. More specifically, the ability to do bespoke orders of production pickups:
"Choose your coils" -59/Jazz neck
"Choose your mag" - a4
"Choose color" - Zebra
"potted" - lightly/yes/no

Re: SD Custom Shop humbuckers you want to be Regular Production Humbuckers

My vote I'd say either the brobucker or the 78 too. And what the hell, make the jb/custom a model too!

Re: SD Custom Shop humbuckers you want to be Regular Production Humbuckers

I'd like an Antiquity with alnico 5 that was severely under wrapped coils like 10% or more

Good point. I've found neck hybrids to be far more useful. Unbalanced coils cancel some of the HB effect and add high-end, which isn't really needed in most bridge HB's. But in the neck slot, the extra treble and reduced mids are great. They really clear up any muffled, muddy sound. I've been experimenting with various hybrids, and a modest difference of .4K between coils really opens up the high-end (4.2 and 3.8). I take a coil from a bridge PAF and combine it with a coil of a neck PAF. You can make a neck hybrid that has great clarity and a sharp high-end. Chords are clearer and solos cut thru. Why aren't more manufacturers doing this!!! To me, the '59/Custom hybrid is overkill; the huge difference between coils (7.0K and 4.2K) makes for a very bright bridge PU. An A5 magnet just adds to that. Whew. A bridge hybrid with a .5K or 1.0K difference between coils is plenty to get the unbalanced coil sound.

Another nice thing about hybrids is that warm magnets are great in them, so you can get the texture and dynamics of an A2 or UOA5 and still have a sharp high-end.

One that doesn't exist yet - the Antiquity 'Whole Lotta Humbucker' set...
