SD Custom Shop P90

So I've been split between the sounds of a humbucker and a P90 for my metal guitar project. Humbucker- hi output destructive gain monster
P-90- Nice thick warm sound and can be very metal with adjustments.
I couldn't decide between the two so and idea hit me. I could put a 7 string EMTY blackout in the bridge and have a 7 string active P90 in a humbucker housing in the neck. I've never seen an active 7 string P90 so this is where the custom shop comes into play. How do you think they'll sound together? How about the P90 sound for metal leads? I just want some practicality input lol.

Re: SD Custom Shop P90

Welcome to the forum.

Active P90, eh? :scratchch

Re: SD Custom Shop P90

The blackouts preamp is something you might want to check out.

Re: SD Custom Shop P90

To my way of thinking, a P90 is the antithesis of active systems. The crudity of that fat single coil is also its beauty.

Re: SD Custom Shop P90

I really like the blackouts but I gotta have that P90. Maybe there could be some preamp to retain the sweet fat tone but still be an active pickup. I also forgot to throw in that I'll try to make a noise cancelling circuit for it.

Re: SD Custom Shop P90

Maybe my ears are weird, but I think of the Blackouts neck as sort of a cyborg-on-futuristic-steroids P-90. It doesn't clean up like a P-90 (actually, it hardly cleans up at all), but with dirt it sounds throaty and guttural, what I love about neck P-90s. OP may want to try a standard Blackouts neck and see if that scratches the itch.

Re: SD Custom Shop P90

Active 7 string P-90 for Heavy Metal?????

You are a madman!

I want to see this just to see it.

By the way - I will metal-up with my Custom P-90 through the recto model from time to time.

One of my main studio and stage guitars is an SG Junior with a 22k P90 (45g, A8/A8) -- Satan himself would approve of the tone :firedevil

Re: SD Custom Shop P90

Well I've contacted seymour duncan twice, the first time 2 weeks ago and the second time a couple of days ago. They will not respond lol. I wonder if they just think I'm a crazy psychotic metal mad man like Aceman said lol

Re: SD Custom Shop P90

You would have thought that some R&D might have already gone into an idea such as yours.

On the other hand, the questions that a developer would need to ask himself are;
1) Can it be done?
2) If so, is there sufficient demand to justify the costs of development, tooling up and marketing?
