SDUG Guitar Profile - Travis & "Kathryn"

Well, I had to make a tough choice on which guitar I wanted in my avatar and which one to put up here with a profile. But here it is, "Kathryn."

Brand: Hamer
Model: Artist Korina HB
Year: 2001
Color: Jazzburst
Body: Korina (limba) semi-hollow with bookmatched chevron Korina top with a subtle flame to it
Neck: 3 piece Korina (limba)
Fret board: Rosewood with MOP dots
Tuners: Schaller
Pickups: Seymour Duncan "Ultimates" specially made for the Hamer Artist Ultimate
Electronics: Every thing is stock except for the pickups (originally 59's). Volume/Volume/Tone with a 3 way toggle
Strings: 11's
Tuned: Standard
Other: Swapped out the black pickup rings and toggle switch cap for cream ones. I just thought the cream plastics went a little better with the Jazzburst finish. Also, control cavity plate was signed by Hamer co-founder Jol Dantzig at the 2005 Hamer "Guru Tour" here in St. Louis. He actually "oohed and ahhed" over the top as it has both a chevron pattern and a light flame to it. Made me feel pretty good about it.
Purchased: Used in 2004 from a Guitar Center in Chicago. I just went in there to get some catalogs I could read in the bathroom. My wife saw it in there and pointed it out to me.
Reason chosen: It was in dead mint shape and stickered for $599. We took it home right then and there.
Named because: Named after my wife since she found it and she bought it for me.
Primary use: I use it for every style I can come up with.
Great Moments: Best moment of all, the day I brought it home.

Wow that is gorgeous. And you got it for only $599?! Amazing. What a steal!

Re: SDUG Guitar Profile - Travis & "Kathryn"

Great photo! Great axe for that matter! Great price! Most important: Great wife!!!! I so wish I could name a guitar for my wife instead of a number or my monster racked ex girlfriend....

Re: SDUG Guitar Profile - Travis & "Kathryn"

Can we get details about the pickups???
very nice gtr

Coming from a guy on the Hamer board when I was researching them.

"The
magnets are alnico v bar magnets with nickel silver bottom
plate, nickel plated studs, wood spacer and cloth braided
single conductor hookup wire. The pick up covers are made
from a special grade of nickel silver commonly called German
silver. The covers adjustable pole pieces and ferrous studs
are plated with 24 karat "hard gold". The specs on mine are
bridge: 8.52k gauss 20 neck 7.15k gauss 20. they are all
individually hand done but I'm sure the specs are relatively
close."

ex girlfriend is monster racked? Got pics??

That was over 20 years ago...pre digital pics. That's who the 73 Paul is named after. But this thread is about Kathryn!

How do the pupsd sound? PAF ish, hotter, scooped, how?

When it looks that good - just strapping it on must be awesome!

Re: SDUG Guitar Profile - Travis & "Kathryn"

The only complaint I could even think about having, is that it could be considered a little neck heavy. Since the body is so light, swapping the tuners out for some lighter weight units has been known to drastically improve the balance on these bad boys.

The pickups are very PAF-like in tone. To me, they sound like a 59 only cleaner, clearer and more articulate, while being less boomy. The bridge bucker can growl and snarl while staying tight in the bottom. The neck bucker is glassy and clean and is very articulate, even under high gain. They're not as warm or smooth as Seths or an APH-1. But they did renew my faith in A5 PAF pickups. Basically, they took everything I loved about the 59s and made them better. I would love to put them side by side with some of those Anniversary A5 Seth Lovers and see how close they are.

Here's a pic of the guitar in its stock form with her namesake holding her. Personally I think the creme rings/switch cap and amber knobs set off the color a little better.

That's a real beauty... and the guitar is awesome too! $599... man, you just stole that guitar, I hope you feel guilty about ripping them off. :laugh2:

The signature is a nice touch, pretty cool to meet your "maker" if you know what I mean.
