Re: SDUG ULTIMATE AXE - Category 2; Fender Strats
My 1996 MIJ '62RI
This was my first ever electric guitar. Bought it when I was 13 years old I think. Had a white pickguard and white covered single coils in it. It was abused quite a bit. At one point, it was completely covered in stickers, I totally degaussed the neck pickup and took it out, moved the middle pup up to the neck position and the middle position was then just a gaping cavity. I replaced the original saddles with graphtech saddles (which are still there). At that point, I'd also taken out the bridge pickup and replaced it with a Dimarzio Fast track 2. That got taken out too. I chiseled the crap outta the bridge pickup cavity to make room for a humbucker. First it was a Super Distortion, then a PAF pro, then a DD HB103, then a JB8. Eventually I started feeling bad for it cuz it looked so so so far from the smooth blues machine that it is. So I ordered a nice black '62 pickguard, and some handwound alnico rod single coils from Rose Pickups with cream covers, got some cream knobs and tips (switch + trem arm), and cleaned off all the stickers and goop. It's still got dents, scratches and chips all over, but that's ok. It still looks a lot younger than its age (15 years old now!)
When I was growing up with this thing, I kinda hated it, because it simply was not capable of producing convincing metal tones. Now, I don't try to make it do things it can't. I just love it for what it is, and can't imagine I'd ever want to get rid of it.
