The previous poll results were pickups for neck + middle.
The next poll will be about the magnet type.
The pickup won't be by any way associated with the artists in the poll - their names are just meant to help us define the style of pickup (output, musical style, etc...). The voicing of the finished product might be pretty different.

Happy voting.

Re: SDUGF Pickup - What Will It Do (Again)

while the p90 voicing in a strat would be hard to do i think SD can pull it off to some extent.

the issue is that the p90 covers a much wider eq/harmonics range than a strat pickup. as you move along the string, you get a differnt sound...you can tell this by picking at different parts of the string. since the p90 is a larger pickup it picks up more of these "harmonics". basically, we'd need a strat pickup with a heck of a field....

OR! we could a have a strat pickup with a big magnet beneath it....like below the pickguard and the strat pickup fit into the hole. you'd need a big route.

i do think that we should decide what sound we want and let SD work their magic. however i think the polling process is very exact. i like the way you are doing it. kudos!

Re: SDUGF Pickup - What Will It Do (Again)

i would still rather leave the magnet type up to SD to decide. I think its kind of ignorant of us to assume we know how to best achieve making a pickup sound like a defined idea when most of us have little to no experience in pup building.

Re: SDUGF Pickup - What Will It Do (Again)

Who exactly is in charge of this process? It seems different people are starting threads about this every couple of days or so.
Who exactly decided the options in this poll, and how did they come to decide them?

Yeah. Have an option on that poll saying

Alnico 5
Alnico 2
Let Seymour Judge

I think especially with the P90 strat one, if it gets picked, it's going to have to be done very specifically and intentionally to get the right effect.

Secondarily, while I love Ritchie Blackmore, he used quarter pounders, which are also sort of P90 like, so two of your options are pretty much the same, and are already produced by SD.

I think the P90 is a bad idea, flat out. A little while ago, there was a thread on hardtail strats. 90% of the posts in the topic were people saying "It doesn't sound anything like a strat so meh." and suddenly now everyone wants a P90 neck pickup, which incidentally will sound nothing like a strat.

Gilmour smooth sounds good, almost better than a P-90 voiced single coil but it's really a toss-up for me

He's in charge. I made the first poll, but he will make all subsequent polls.

Re: SDUGF Pickup - What Will It Do (Again)

I want Blackie.. but seriously anything will be nice... a p90 voiced is nice too. But Blackie is my first choice.

Well, the point is to kind of straddle the fence between strat pickup and p-90, which is why it says p-90 voicing in a strat pickup. You can't make a strat pickup sound like an authentic p-90, but I'll be ****ed if seymour doesn't have a trick or two up his sleeve to get a little more juice out of the standard strat neck pickup. Because of my personal use for it (HSS strat) I would love for it to sound like a strat pickup with some p-90 characteristics. In fact, I'd be dissapointed if it lost the character of a single coil neck pickup in the process.

edit: Plus, a p-90 voiced strat neck pickup would cover so much ground... You want blackmore? Turn that amp up! You want gilmour? Get his vibrato down and you're halfway there. SRV? Are you kidding? You don't think a p-90 can do the blues? Country? Pass the fried chicken and collard greens! Metal? Ok, it shouldn't be able to do metal, but if you're trying to do metal with a neck single coil there are many offerings already out there.

Actually a P-90 CAN do metal (mainly rhythm) with the right blend of fuzz, gain and touch.

Re: SDUGF Pickup - What Will It Do (Again)

So it can do everything then... But I must say, I didn't see the brian may thing at first, I gotta say, I would love for the pickup to have a treble register like some of queen's recordings... Maybe we can make it like a 3-way: Single coil with deep, clear bass, stronger p-90-esque midrange, and a fat, bright top end that sings. If you could put that into a pickup, it would be hot like fire.

Thanks.

I think that SD can work their magic and do an exact P90 voicing for a Strat BUT - we are all accustomed to hearing a P90 in a Gibson type guitar - different construction, different woods... IMO a vintage Strat SC in an SG would sound more like the P90 we know, then a real P90 in a Strat. Then again, a P90 that works well with 500k pots and has more output could give you a killer HSS Strat.

BTW,
Hard rocking pickup For The Win... Blackmore rules! :cool2:

Blackmore, didn't always use a QP. He moved to Lace Hot Golds somewhere in the late 80's IMHO and before the QP he used different Strat pickups. The end result might be a different output and magnet QP, who knows? just like the Brobucker was a hotter PAF and the Crazy 8 is a cooler different magnet PATB in a way...
I would love to see the little P90 designed with adjustable poll pieces and a magnet bar just like the normal size version and not like the QP.

I see where you're coming from I just think that the problem is different - used in a Strat which reminds nothing of a regular Gibson-esque guitar it might not have too much in common with the P90 tone we know...

+1. Let the "pros" decide on what specs to go with. You guys are the players, you figure out what sound you are looking for.

Re: SDUGF Pickup - What Will It Do (Again)

Blackmore's hard rockin pup FTW! (and anyway the 2nd most voted is very similiar to Blackmore option)

Re: SDUGF Pickup - What Will It Do (Again)

Its fun to see there is some tight competition - at least for now.

Can any admin please sticky this thread?

Re: SDUGF Pickup - What Will It Do (Again)

D@mn, the way they're right now I like so many options I honestly cannot decide!!!

I think maybe I'm gonna wait a little and read some more posts/ideas...
Great poll JohnnyGuitar!

Re: SDUGF Pickup - What Will It Do (Again)

For me, it was a tossup between Blackmore and Brian May, since I've already got a P-90 axe. I finally settled on Brian May. That's my lonely vote up there. :)
