Re: SDUGF Pickup - What Will It Do (Again)

Heh, I never thought of that, but would be friggin cool! I could handle a lil 78 or lil Diablo or really any lil "insert custom shop p/up here".

+1

I was talking about this idea a few time (never seemed to get too much attention). Little 78 (or Brownie :)) or a Little Brobucker might be a great idea, not only in the bridge position.

Re: SDUGF Pickup - What Will It Do (Again)

Come on you guys, the poll's about to close and a +-1 vote really isn't gonna cut it for a clear winner. This way it seems we'll be making a "Hard Rocking, P90 Voicing in a Strat Ritchie Blackmore Inspired Pickup " :p

(BTW, if you're ok with this then I'm certainly game ;))

EDIT: D@mn, I posted on the closing... Oh well... Let's got for the next one...

That's what I've been saying all the time!

Re: SDUGF Pickup - What Will It Do (Again)

Actually what I thought was either a 3 or 5 way poll.

Depending on reactions here re-post the two winners OR the two plus two (Gilmour/SRV, although I feel that would make things more complicated) AND post the extra combo option (the P-90+Blackmore)

So:
  • P-90 voiced Pickup
  • Hard Rocking pickup
  • (add +2 here if you want to)
  • The P-90 Hard Rocking pickup COMBO option

What do you guys think.
Personally I can be happy with virtually any option so I'd like to hear what the rest of you guys think...:)

Re: SDUGF Pickup - What Will It Do (Again)

In all honesty though I feel we'd cover more ground AND satisfy more people if we were to return to the very first idea of making a Hard Rock P-90 that can be tapped/split into a more vintage output.

In all honesty I think this would yield the best results and the most happy faces...

I agree, but I think a new poll is still necessary. That's how everyone's opinion gets counted. I'm for a poll that includes three options: one, the other, or a combo.

Re: SDUGF Pickup - What Will It Do (Again)

It looks like we're going for a take on the QP just like the Crazy 8 was actually a take on the PATB pups...

We can always just say - hey we want to tweak the QP... higher/lower output, different magnet, noiseless, etc...

Re: SDUGF Pickup - What Will It Do (Again)

The Crazy 8 wasn't another PATB pickup in the sense the Custom 5 was another take on the Custom series though.

It has the Parallel Axis construction but that was the last feature we chose. By the time we decided on the pole-pieces construction we had already decided on magnet, output and general voicing...

That being said, this time let's stick with the original plan.
Decide HOW we'd like it to sound like and what ground we'd want it to cover and let the masters decide if tweaking an already existent pickup will do it or if they'd need sth entirely new...

Anyway, how would the rest of you guys like to go from here?

Does the "redo" poll still mean anything? It seems that a neck/middle single coil won convincingly.

So is it now a Blackmoorish N/M single coil? I'm just trying to follow the process.

Re: SDUGF Pickup - What Will It Do (Again)

Erm, this is round no.3

One vote difference isn't really a clear winner so we're basically contemplating what to do from now on.

Keith said (and I agree with him) that the best course would be to make a 2nd round for this poll, one re-posting the two winners (The P-90 in a Strat and the Blackmoorish options) AND add a 3rd option where we'll be COMBINING the two winners, a Hard Rocking Blackmoorish pickup with a P-90 voicing.

BUT, before going on with this it'd be best to ask what you guys thing too.

Re: SDUGF Pickup - What Will It Do (Again)

I support the idea 100%.

Someone please direct me to a video or soundclip where the target Blackmore sound can be heard so I can vote responsibly.
For that matter, I'd like to hear a sample of what most would consider to be desireable clean and dirty P-90 tones.

Re: SDUGF Pickup - What Will It Do (Again)

That IS nice. Almost vintage sounding with the volume rolled back and then fat without being overly punchy with the heat on. Me likey.

What amp was he using amp?

I'm guessing he's got a Marshall Major going here. If not, it's probably an AC30, but I think he's going into a Marshall.

Re: SDUGF Pickup - What Will It Do (Again)

Hey, that IS a good throaty sound!
But that was just stock Fenders and a lot of magic in the hands me thinks.

But yeah, basically what I had in mind was that meets the tone a P-90 SG had.
More like a Texas meets British tone, that rude growling type, but toned down some (well, seeing how we'd have the SC geometry instead of the P-90 one that'd be easy enough...) and with that Stratty sparkle, bell-like quality...

Ah, here, I dug the link to a thread forum bro formula73 did a review of his P-90 SG. Think the Blackmore link above meets this: https://forum.seymourduncan.com/showthread.php?t=133533
EDIT: Ok, here's a link directly to the video review so as to keep you from looking :p
