SDUGF Pickup - What's Next?

Please read and give your input. Even if you can sum it up in I don't care.

The polls are over. The design that was chosen is a noiseless, P90 voiced Strat pickup, that is meant for the middle and neck.

This is actually a pretty unique and usable design IMHO.

The thing is, most people on the forum didn't show signs of enthusiasm, participation or anticipation. That is how I see it and how a few others see it. I don't think we are wrong.

I can give a lot of explanations to this fact -
Less enthusiasm after already having two forum pickups
People are really more into custom shop humbuckers
Might be the way I conducted the polls
Might be the economic situation in our world that makes people want to spend less money - we all have more fuel expenses lately then GAS expenses

Might be all or some of the above - but the fact remains, this pickup doesn't seem like a huge success.

So what do you want to do about it? just go on with it, start a new design (maybe not immediately)? postponed it to a time when people will be in a better mood for shopping? just give it up? :dunno:

Well i didn't take participation because of 2 things
1)I am a single Humbucker type of player
2)I play 7/8 string guitars
3)The only SD design i ma interested in is PATB ,wich i clearly showed on our last Forum PU.

but i think it's great that ,the latest one is going to be a Singlecoil.We did enough Humbuckers didn't we?

So i would say ,the next thing could be like P rails or Laternative 8 stlye PU...Or maybe even an Active design with some nice tweaks etc!

In all honesty, I think it's just that people are (way) more into humbuckers than they are to single coils.
From the very beginning it showed when several members tried to sway the process towards that direction.

However we already had two humbuckers. One was the predominant "Another PAF" and the other was the "Modern JB design". Both making about 90% of the basic types of humbuckers one will go for.

Now it is time for a Single Coil, it makes sense, it's what is the most needed and we DO have a good thing in our hands.

When we went we more or less knew we wouldn't draw as much interest as the other two times. But I think what killed it was that oddly enough "high profile" SC users that were very vocal last year about wanting a SC stayed quiet this time. Dunno why.

In any case, I think that we did what we had to do, we did it well and that we should go on with it.
(And no man, nothing to do with the way you conducted the polls or anything )

Yeah some Tele PU would be cool.Not that I can use it.But there are so many tele lovers/players here....

I lost interest when it people wanted a P-90 sound from a sc. I dont see the point or usefulness of it. Get a P-90 and be done with. Lets make a unique sc that is still has sc tone/vibe at heart.

I would like to see another noiseless set for Strat (not rails). Sure, there's the Classic Stack Plus but perhaps another set using the same design elements, just a little hotter. That would be a nice option.

I've got the Brobucker so I had no interest in the Crazy 8, which on paper looks like the Super Distortion. Dunno how it sounds though.

A P90 voiced single-coil is a cool idea, but the success rate of it, I think, would be lower than an a traditional slightly overwound noiseless single-coil. That's just my opinion.

the brobucker and crazy 8 are the first two.

im a single coil guy but i dont really have any interest in a noisless p90 strat neck pup.

i say lets put it to evan and frank falbo. at the end of the day, if its deemed there is not enough interest to make it worth while for SD to go ahead and design/make for a discounted forum price, then they are the guys who can tell us and so be it.

personally i would love it if i was a true single, noiseless or otherwise, but like jeremy, i def have less interest in a p90 voiced pup. that said, i would prob still buy one just to check it out.

I was really excited about this too, but if there are not enough forum members behind it, then it wouldn't make sense to ask for a discounted pickup, becuase the entire point is to enable the custom shop to make them in such quantities as to make it economically practical. Sigh...

IMO anything except a humbucker or a Strat pickup wouldnt be tenable becuase there wouldnt be enuf folks interested, even though there would be plenty, to be sure.
Seymour has soo much ground covered with his line of Strat pickups that there really isnt much else except maybe what I had wanted, which is a 50's output A8 Strat bridge pickup.
As far as the P90., the Prails is probably the ultimate so why even look any further?

Let's put it to the powers that be, and see about starting the order process. If there isn't enough interest (Last time we needed 10 it think?) It just won't happen.

The bottom line is that you are the User Group and this is YOUR forum. We threw out the offer and we'll make whatever pickup you want.

However, if we can only get a few takers for this pickup, it's not going to result in great economies of scale that would allow the custom shop to greatly reduce the price, like they did with the other two forum pickups. I believe we built well over 100 each of those.

And it should be a Forum Pickup. If a few guys hooked up together and made a pickup for themselves it is fine but it is not a forum pickup. If the SD company could offer a discount deal to ten guys who decide on a pickup together - there are better ways to design it.

My opinion - lets wait until a real need arises - like the 10k PAF that resulted in the Bro Bucker - then we'll go for it...

The short version for me is that the final design is not one that serves any purpose for me. Simply being "cool" is not enough. The same was true of the crazy 8. The BroBucker was something I had an interest in and I purchased.

Dunno guys, I was really excited about a SC SDUGF pickup but it seems not all of us are on the same page here. I mean, even in this thread I didn't see even two bros saying they wanted the same thing while I did see two that said they'd rather take the router out to open a hole for a real P-90 or a humbucker in the neck of their strats than to go for that...

Dunno, if we'd still be on I'd still go for it but the way things stand I think the best way is for people to SHOW whether they'll be interested in putting their money where their mouth are.

I say set up one final poll, a PUBLIC poll asking people how many of those they'd buy.

1 through 5 plus maybe the "I'll buy at least one and maybe I'll then order some more after I had a chance to check it out" option.

That way we'll see in numbers how many are still interested and how many pickups we're talking about.

Then SD themselves can see whether the numbers are enough to justify a "User Group pickup".

i think SD would much more benefit from something around 9-10k and kinda PAF-ish

i mean that's the biggest gap in the current duncan line, there's PAF's, and then there's hot 14k+ pickups, nothing in the 10k range
