Selling my amp head. what next?

Hey everyone,

I currently have a peavey windsor 100W head. I used it for big shows, and it served me well, but now with the new school program I won't have time to do the whole rock star thing anymore. So now it is sitting in my room and it is VERY loud. It is increadibly loud to the point where it is not usable in my setting. So now I have to sell it, and buy something smaller, that I can rock out on in my room, but still jam with a drummer on occasion.

I would like to keep my cab if possible. I was looking at cool little amps like the orange tiny terror, or things of sorts, but I don't know if they are compatible with my 4X12 cab.

So, what do you guys think? Any suggestions, concidering I also don't want to spend to much after having sold the peavey.

Re: Selling my amp head. what next?

Keep your cab, but sell the Windsor, and replace it with a blue grill Valvetronix head like the AD60VTH or AD120VTH. You'll soon see how low you dial it down to, and still get all the tone, by blending the OD models with the amp model gain. You can shape any type of sound you want, and the variable wattage on the back panel allows you to tailor it to your situation. Plus, it has a tuner and FX.

I would have killed to have my current practice rig, the AD60VHT on the Bogner 212 cab when I was younger. It's the only amp that can sound like any cranked amp at 1 AM in an apartment.

And, if you turn it up loud, it'll sound like the Windsor, plus much more. The little tube in the Valvetronix does make a difference in the tube feel under the fingers.

Ohmage aside, any head can & will work with any cab.

Though, if you need to cut back on volume if I were you I'd sell the 4x12 as well. It's a matter of physics, four speakers will always displace more air then two or one... so even with a 10 watt head it'll be "louder" through a 4x12.

There's no "good" reason to have a 4x12 if your just playing in your room... Plus 4x12's are just hellacious to carry around.

Even a 22 watt 1x12 Dlx Reverb or a 15 watt Pro Jr. can "hang" with a drummer depending on the tone you're after. Get it up off the ground... on a chair or milk crate.

If you like your head, you could sell the cab and get a 1x12... maybe pull a pair of tubes & run it as a 50 watter.

Re: Selling my amp head. what next?

Both very valid points. I might combine the two ideas, and get a the vox head in the 60 watt format, and get a different cab, maybe a 2x12.

Beside the vox, would anything out there fit the bill?

EDIT : I thought about it, and a combo could also work for me if i decide to sell it all. That opens up a hole new game. Any ideas?

I like combo's personally because they are 1) more portable and 2) usually a cheaper option then separate head and cab. I'd go with a combo myself depends on what speaker you have in the cab vs the combo you are looking at speakers?

Re: Selling my amp head. what next?

Peavey makes a smaller version of the Windsor(Studio) that has one power tube in single ended class a, and can take just about any power or pre amp tube. That will be around half the available volume of the 120 watt Windsor head, plus only has 1x12 inch speaker which cuts the volume even further. If you can find one, let us know where to get one.

Re: Selling my amp head. what next?

I would sell both the head and the cab. Before I bought a Bassman 4x10 (same reason, more school, less rock star= lower volume) I had a Mesa Tremoverb 100 watt 2x12 combo. I play with a rather loud drummer and the Mesa actually had a little trouble cutting through. When I bought the Bassman, a couple weeks later I started playing with that drummer again and feared I wouldn't be able to keep up. BUT, to my surprise, the Bassman holds up a lot better than the Mesa at only 45 watts.

Don't know whether to attribute it to the 4x10 cab compared to the 2x12 or if the Mesa was faulty (Guitar Centers problem now) but I now have the convenience of a gig worthy amp that doesn't crush the house when I play. So I would consider selling both, down sizing doesn't mean it won't hold it's own in a band setting when you want to get back into it.

Re: Selling my amp head. what next?

Some amps just disappear in a band... now matter how much air is being displaced.

It's about frequency response.

Re: Selling my amp head. what next?

Alright, so I went to my local music store today, and checked out a few things. This is the short list :

- Vox valvetronix AD50VT silver face
- Marshall MD50FX
- Marshall MD100FX
- Marshall AVT50x
- Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue 40W 1x12"
- Peavey Classic 30/112 Tube Combo AmpCombo

So, what do you guys think? Right now I really like the marshall AVT series, they are valve amps, but still have that nice marshall tone to em at a good volume. On the other hand, the peavey classic 30 and the fender blues deluxe are really nice tube monsters. I am trully confused.

Re: Selling my amp head. what next?

I'm not sure if the top two Marshalls list are supposed to be "MG" series? If so, you'll hate them. Marshall should be embarrased to have their name on it. The Fender is alot of money for not much tone unless its cranked. If you can check out a Hughes & Kettner look at a Edition Tube 20. I have one and it is a tone machine. Simple, closed back, external speaker jack, effect loop, clean and dirty channel, reverb, 3 band EQ, footswitch jack.

If you go to hughes and kettner website you can see more.

Re: Selling my amp head. what next?

Alright guys, this is the deal. I sold my stack. It will be gone on friday, and I got good cash for it. Now I intend to spend about 750 on a combo. I have narrowed it down to two choices.

- Marshall AVT50X
- Fender blues deluxe reissue ( tweed! )

Alright, so the fender is about 200$ more than the marshall, but it is tube. What do you guys think? Is it worth the extra money, or is the marshall good enough? I hear that the blues deluxe is kind of a one trick amp, and the marshall is more diverse in it's sound.

What do you guys think?

Edit : There is also the peavey classic 30, but I know peavey doesn't have a good rep around these parts.

I'd get a Classic 30 long before an AVT Marshall (A hybrid, I think?).

people do love that Fender model...

Re: Selling my amp head. what next?

Traynor YCV40 or Peavey Classic 30 if you can't try the Traynor.

These are killer amps.

I dunno... what do YOU think?

You played 'em right? Which one blows your skirt up?

Personally I don't like the dirt channel on the blues dlx... I'd need a good dirt box in front & use it as a single channel amp or maybe use the amps dirt as an alternate tone.

Classic 30 is pretty hip. Speaker kinda sucks IMO but you can put something else in there later if you feel the need for it...

Someone else posted a link to Rivera Chubster on fleabay for like $800 a day or two ago... that'd get my dollar over all of these other options.

Tiny Terror with a 1x12 cab?

Used Deluxe Reverb with a dirt pedal? Plenty of used Boogie combos in that range too...

I have a little different opinion on this that the others. Get a 2x12 and an attenuator instead of selling the amp. This would sound better than any of those solid state junkers.
