Seth Lover HB with Megaswitch P

Hi Folks,

I’m new to this forum, but not really a novel when it comes to electric guitars and how to modify them.

But now I have a question which I can’t resolve by myself.

I’m building together a new Thinline Tele from Warmoth parts which will be equipped with two SD Seth Lover (Neck and Bridge version), splittable (4 wire conducting cable).

The switch will be a 5-way Megaswitch (P-version, details: http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Electronics,_pickups/Components:_Switches_and_knobs/2/Megaswitches.html

to achieve exactly the 5 Paul Reed Smith positions:

Pos 1: Brigde HB
Pos 2: outer coils of the the two HB, parallel
Pos 3: inner coils of the two HB, serial
Pos 4: inner coils of the two HB, parallel
Pos 5: Neck HB

Now I have the following doubts: which are the inner and which are the outer coils?

When I look at the PRS guitars, I can see that they are mounted “mirrored”, with the screws of the Pickups (polepieces) pointing respectively to the neck and the bridge.

Do I have to mount my “Seth Lover”s in the same way to achieve the same result or do I have to mount them differently?

Or asking in a different way:

Which one is the starter coil in the Seth Lover PU’s: is it the one with the screws or the covered one (no visible screws).
Is this sequence the same for the neck and bridge position?

In other threads i read something about the Pickups needing to have reverse polarity. Is that true? Or are the set of Seth Lovers already reverse wound one to each other?

I hope that I was able to explain my problem and that anyone can help me.:scratchch

Thanks in advance

Hey Khal, welcome!!! Let me save you some time and frustration. DON'T use the P- switch!!! It doesn't do what you think it will. Ibelieve it functions the same as a schecter guitar ( that has special switching, forgot which one though). I had one for a while that i couldn't get to work properly. I even sent it to artietoo ( where'd he go anyway?) and he came to the same conclusion.

I wound up doing the same setup with a 4 pole 5-way super switch.

To answer your other questions, the "inner" coils are the ones without screwpoles.
You also have to flip one of the pickup magnets over to reverse to polarity in order to make all 5 positions noise canceling. Do a search on magnet swaps to get a step by step.
Good luck!!

Well, thanks for your answer!
Pew, you really made me sweat with your answer, as I have to turn my plans upside down. I have to re-think it all over again.:crying:
In the matter of fact I showed you the link to the stewmac megaswitch, but in reality it is a P-Megaswitch made by Schaller/Germany and sold by Rockinger/Germany (http://www.rockinger.com/index.php?cat=WG121&lang=ENG&product=17010). But I think it ends up being the same thing. I indicated the stewmac switch, because I was'nt shure that you know Rockinger over there in the States (I am German but live in Portugal), thinking that the stewmac switch is somehow the same thing...
However, it seems after all that the magnet turnaround seems to be unavoidable....
But thank you for the hint that the inner coils are the ones with no visible polepieces, in other words the starter coils. That is some help.
As I already started the soldering job, I'll get through with it and test it. If it sucks, I might take your advice and do something with the Fender Superswitch (I have one here, but it's such a monster....)
Best regards:thanks:

Re: Seth Lover HB with Megaswitch P

This is like degavu all all over agian. I was thinking about a similar project, but I didn't know that you could get a thinline routed for HB/HB. I had been thinking in terms of using single coil sized humbuckers.

Re. Juanhanglo's post: This just emphasizes my continuing rant about poor documentation on switches.

Thank you hamerfan (between us: vielen Dank!)
I already know the Page of Guenter Eyb, but it does'nt answer my question. I even wrote a message to Mr. Eyb himself, but his answer wasn't very helpful though... Nobody answers to my doubt in what concerns the core problem. I'll just try it out and then maybe post the result here.

And hi mudpuppy: of course you can rout (almost) any guitar for (almost) every pickup... At Warmoth (or similar) you can order it as you like.... So courage and go for it...

Bless you all, guys
Keep searching for the good tone:beerchug:
