Seth Lover Neck not crispy

Hi !
I have a seth lover in Duesenberg Starplayer a semi like Es335
there is 1 vol pot 500k and 1 Tone pot 500k and a .22uf cap.
and a treble bleeder at the vol pot I guess 220pF.
I removed the nickel cover and turned the screwes up 2mm.
I am still not pleased with the SethNeck PU and missing at clean a open airy sound.
Well it cd be the wood - with a P90 there is beefy and a good
portion treble.
Any clue or is it this way?:onder:
the overdrive sound of the seth is excellent !

Re: Seth Lover Neck not crispy

the seth in the neck is a warm paf type tone, i dont think of neck pups as being crisp sounding. it should sound big warm and round.

the wood might not be helping either.

are you 90% close to where you want to be? if so then i would try shorter screws and maybe turning the pup around so the adjustable poles are closer to the bridge.

if you are only 60% happy then i would look at a different pup, like the jazz

From what I read, I can see a number of problems with your setup:

  • Covered pickup
  • Unpotted pickup
  • Neck Position
  • Hollowbody guitar

Re: Seth Lover Neck not crispy

Thanks alot.
Oh yes I see. I will try my P90 again. in youtube you can see a nice demo of a set
seths in an ES335 Tokai neck and bridge. This was the goal.
To my memory the Sh2 neck had way more treble in a Jazz Epi L5!

I would think unpotted would help with the crisp factor. Otherwise, the Seth is known for its smoothness, not crispiness or airiness, though if you yank the cover it will get more airy.

Re: Seth Lover Neck not "airy"

Thanks!
well the PUP is already cover-off AND un-waxed.

What amp was used in the demo? I've got Seths a Tokai ES335 and they're round, warm and big. Under gain they're big and crunchy but not what I'd described as crispy.

Re: Seth Lover Neck not crispy

well good point : AMP!
I am running a Marshall JTM45 clone with a typical
1987x pre amp stage in brilliant channel 0.68uF kathod cap.
I can easily compare to my other Duesenberg C.Carlton with a original P90 neck.
OK I guess the test of the Seth went wrong , missed the goal of BlueMarins nice
clean open sounds... I admit he is a **** good player! and has Es335 and a total different amp, too.
All great points with make a huge difference.

Re: Seth Lover Neck not crispy

with gibson style guitars, big open clean tones usually can be found with both pups on

Re: Seth Lover Neck not crispy

hallo bluefrog,
my sethN now has an A5 and no cover. Looks great with double cream with gold screws!
And sound is great too. More highs, more honk, still a little woody/reedy

Re: Seth Lover Neck not crispy

hi to augsburg.
you know that CustomShopAntiquity was more open to my memory
I regret having it sold as pair with that lame bridge ANT.
well I adjusted again little things and it is getting better.
Thanks all guys for giving hints on that.
A convertion into A5 Seth... mmmmh I am afraid it gets even more fat instead bright shining bell-tones. what I thought was more a D.Betts Tone - now it is more of a vintage EC women tone. ok this is not bad. really.
