Seth Lovers vs ‘59s Epiphone Dot through DRRI

Re: Seth Lovers vs ‘59s Epiphone Dot through DRRI

Re: Seth Lovers vs ‘59s Epiphone Dot through DRRI

i have two sets of sns so i should know this for a fact but both mine are covered, i thought the neck and bridge use different wire?

They might, and probably do, given the DCR of the bridge model. But however they do it, the bridge is made hotter, to balance with the neck. Two necks is the stock T-Top setup. N+B is a modern balanced version of the T-Top sound.

i can believe that. the neck is sorta t-top like, probably more so if you put a short a5 in there. i think the neck is poly and the bridge is #42 pe from what i remember. ill have to pop the covers off one set to find out for sure

Yes, not a "perfect" T-Top, but as close as Duncan gets IME.

I love the SNS neck pickup, personally. Best Duncan humbucker after the Seth neck, IMO.

With a magnet swap you can eliminate the mid scoop in a 59B. Either an A2 or an A4, but especially the A2. I like the roughcast A2 from AddictionFX.

Or, since you want covers, just go for a set of Seth Lovers. They are alnico 2 and definitely not mid-scooped.

I was just playing my SE Singlecut with Seth Lovers. The one on the right. Great sound!

Nice collection! I may end up trying the Lovers eventually. Any experience with the whole lotta humbuckers?

That’s interesting about the SNS. I don’t hear as much about them. I am going to get the 59s and am set on the neck but am considering getting a WLH bridge to pair with it instead of the 59 bridge. Good idea or not worth it?

WLH is slightly hotter, slightly less scooped 59. It pairs well with 59s for those wanting more power in the bridge- a great combo!

Awesome. I like scooped in the neck but I see in the bridge it can sound a little “hollow” almost.

I did also consider putting an AP2 in the bridge but I worry that the 59 neck would overpower it.

A 59 won't overpower it. They are sort of opposite EQ-wise, however, with the 59 being scooped and the A2P being mid-heavy. I can see that combo working, especially if you are the only guitarist in a band.

So, I have an Epi Dot with a Seth Lover bridge and a '59 neck. I play through a Traynor YCV-40, which has a clean channel somewhat similar in character to a deluxe reverb.

The bridge is very bright/jangly, and the neck is a bit darker and more scooped with a gorgeous clean sound. It took me a while to get along with them - at first I'd EQ my amp to make the neck sound perfect and the bridge would be a little screetchy/bright. Then I'd EQ my amp to make the bridge sound perfect and the neck would be too boomy. I've got the Seth very close to the strings now, the '59 backed off a bit, and have adjusted the pole pieces on both to balance the strings. The '59 I angle the bass side a little further down than the treble side, the Seth I have flat.

I love 'em now. The neck is clear and refined. Works great for jazz with the tone and volume rolled a little bit off. Works great for blues and rock solos with the tone and volume all the way up. The bridge is bright and jangly, but not overbearing. It cuts through pretty well and sounds decent for classic rock and even some hard rock stuff. I usually keep the volume up all the way and the tone rolled slightly off. There's a lovely singing tone that it gets if you roll the tone further back. If you get it up to metal levels of gain at any volume you'll be dealing with a lot of feedback, although this is controllable with some careful string muting and angling of the guitar.

Volume wise, they balance pretty well as I've got them now, but the '59 has more output than the Seth, so you have to keep it further from the strings. If I had to pick only one, I really like the '59 neck tone. You can EQ it so that it takes on an almost acoustic quality clean, and it's lovely and round for edge of breakup leads.

Do you feel that the bass in the 59 is too boomy? All the talk about the scooped mids and the fact that the Deluxe Reverb has no mid tone control makes me wonder if it will be ultra scooped. I’m still planning on trying them though, with nickel covers.

I use my '59 without a cover in the neck position (double cream - suck it DiMarzio). Initially I did find it the bass a bit overbearing. After adjusting the pickup height (angling the bass side away from the strings a couple millimeters) and then fine tuning the screws it's not boomy at all. I like to run my amp with the mids and treble full up, then dial back the bass different amounts depending on the guitar I'm using. The '59 is scooped for a humbucker, but it isn't more scooped than a single coil.

I use a 59 in a semi hollow Godin, and it isn't boomy, so I would expect like many pickups, it depends on the guitar. The 59 is perfect in my guitar.

Awesome! Musicians Friend has a 20% coupon right now so I’m definitely going to try them out.

Now I just have to tackle swapping out my own pickups. I’ve never done it and hear the Dot can be pretty challenging.

What kind of amp do you play through? Do you have any sound clips?

Just cut the leads in the control cavity and solder the pickup directly to them. Shouldn't take more than 5 minutes to swap. (Protip - put a towel down over the top of the guitar to catch any solder that falls down and could mark the surface. :P)

Take it apart and solder everything else up properly when you need to remove the whole wiring harness at some point in the future. This gives you a quick way to see if you like the sound of the pickup, and won't make any real difference to what comes out of your amp.

I either use a Mesa Blue Angel on the 6v6 setting, a Fractal AX8, or a Tech 21 Trademark 60. This is a TV appearance with a Tech 21 Trademark 10 going direct.

I know it’s been a while but I did end up getting the Seth Lovers. Ordered them over a month ago! Still on backorder from Musicians Friend.

Wow, that's a long time! I'd consider cancelling and seeing if Sweetwater (or literally any other dealer) has them.
