Setting up old speakers with a modern HD TV

Hey all,

So I've got some old speakers with the old style leads that I'd like to use with a modern HD TV from a few years ago.

What's the best way to go about this? Is there some kind of converter I could use?

Thanks all,
<3

Your TV almost certain has stereo chinch outlets just like a 1978 stereo tape deck.

What are chinch plugs called in American?

Pictures of the TV connectors and the speaker wires would be helpful, but here' my 2 cents:

Do the speakers have their own amp and electrical power?

If yes then you should be able to use RCA connectors. If no then you'll need an amplifier for them.

No idea, BUT, my speakers don't have that, their wires look like this:

Well you will need an amplifier.

I think RCA plugs are what I was looking for.

You need a receiver, which has an amplifier. Older speakers need some decent wattage to work. The tv, cable box, cd player, mp3 player and other devices plug into the receiver and then the receiver amplifies the signal and powers the speakers.

You can could find some pretty cheap used units on craigslist.

Re: Setting up old speakers with a modern HD TV

A lot of modern TV's have no analog/RCA type output plugs. They only have HDMI plugs to link to a surround style amp.

If you have a TV that has detatchable speakers connected to it you may be able to use the plugs where they connect. This probably means you will have to get some sort of plug to put on your speaker leads.
If that can be done, It would be wise to check the wattage output of the TV and the wattage of the speakers. If the speakers are less than the TV , don't use them. If they are greater than twice the TV, again don't use them.

If you can't do the previous your stuck with HDMI and a surround amp as your option. Most convertor units of HDMI to " what ever " are pricey.

Re: Setting up old speakers with a modern HD TV

You will need an amp to send audio from the tv to the speaker. The audio level will be too low. Many tvs still have rca. I believel that you will find that most stereos will still work with bare wire. Some have binding posts and others clips. You can probably get a cheap av stereo with hdmi on Craig's list. If your tv has RCA plugs then any stereo with RCA input will work including Vintage stereos from the 1970's onward.
