Seymour Duncan humbuckers with fat treble for Metal?.

I love my DiMarzio Super Distortion/PAF Pro Combo. I’ve tried several pickups, and so far I haven’t heard any other set that balances clarity and warmth so well. While it can be used for Metal, I’m sure it’s not the most modern sounding and tightest combination. Perhaps is best suited for hard rock.
I would like to know if there are any metal Seymour Duncan pups with rounded high frequencies. The Invader comes to mind, but I would appreciate your suggestions. The amp I’m using is an Orange Micro Dark.

Alternative 8 comes to mind for the bridge.

For the neck, something hotter with an A4 magnet could work. Put one in a Screamin' Demon. There, two things I don't like (A4 and a Demon in the neck) and I put them together, lol! The Perpetual Burn in the neck would be another, though an A4 might not be necessary; just drop it a little lower.

Thanks. I might consider the full shred as well, since I like a bit more brightness in the neck position.

Re: Seymour Duncan humbuckers with fat treble for Metal?.

I love the Full Shred Neck paired with a Screamin' Demon in the bridge.

You're right, the top end of a Full Shred Neck is bright, and while the positon makes a difference, it still has a somewhat sharp top end. I've only put it in a 22-fretter. 24 frets will make a difference. It is considerably weaker than a PAF Pro.

Re: Seymour Duncan humbuckers with fat treble for Metal?.

There is a review in SD’s blog that praises the Alternative 8/Screaming Demon pairing, and apparently it works well on both set neck and Bolt On guitars.

Re: Seymour Duncan humbuckers with fat treble for Metal?.

There's a video of James Ryan using a Screamin' Demon in the neck that is representative.

I don't like the Screamin' Demon in the neck *at all*. But some here love it. It's like everything I don't like about the Jazz as a hard rock/metal lead player...on steroids. It's to the point that it makes the neck position sound like it has an identity crisis; 24-frets will make that even worse (though you didn't mention how many frets your guitar has).

An A4 should help the sterile midrange/lack of upper mid push.

Well, there are several options for neck pup, and SD’s website recommends pairing the Alternative 8 with either the 59, the Jazz and the Full Shred neck Humbuckers. So many options!.

Re: Seymour Duncan humbuckers with fat treble for Metal?.

It actually recommends pairing the Full Shred Neck with something?!? That pickup only gets love by about three people on the forum.

Wih the exception of high output sets, Seymour Duncan pretty well never recommends anything but vintage output neck humbuckers. Look at what they have to offer for higher-than-vintage neck pickups knowing that the Sentient is actually a vintage output pickup.

If you want PAF Pro-level output you will be disappointed with the Full Shred Neck. Don't get me wrong, I love both neck pickups.

IMO you are trying to improve on perfection. You said it yourself how good it is. IMO the dimarzio SD is the best hot HB there is for tight clear smooth sustaining distortion with just the right EQ curve. I don't think you're going to do better. It's never a good idea to try and improve something thats already more than good enough to keep you happy. Look elsewhere for things other then pickups to make you happy, maybe even just practicing. Just MO.

Re: Seymour Duncan humbuckers with fat treble for Metal?.

pickups with very good treble response:

Full shred (set)
Parallel Axis Original (PATB-1 set)
Screamin' Demon (lower output for the bridge but very scooped)
Duncan Custom (so much treble it becomes tiring at times)

Re: Seymour Duncan humbuckers with fat treble for Metal?.

Scooped isn't something I'd attribute to my favorite Duncan bridge pickup. Maybe in a bass-heavy guitar.

Warm and clear duncan? Not sure if it exists to be honest, but ive heard things about the alternative 8. Id go for a bkp juggernaut set, it sounds right up your alley. Super clear, yet very warm in the bridge. Never gets harsh, you can crank the hell out of the treble. The neck retains pick attack and brightness when needed but smooths out for petrucci-esque leads.

You could easily pair an Illuminator with the Alt8.

Taste is subjective, but yes, both are terrific pickups used by players as diverse as Al DiMeola, Tom Scholz, Ace Frehley, Adrian Smith (Super Distortion), Trey Azaghtoth, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai (PAF Pro), and Paul Gilbert (both). They can be used for everything from Jazz Fusion to AOR to Classic Metal.

Perhaps I should rephrase my query. One day at a guitar shop I tried my guitar, an LTD eclipse with stock LTD passive pickups, and an LTD with EMG’s; through a Marshall DSL5c with the distortion knob maxed. Under this extreme gain serting, my guitar kind of lost a bit of tightness and definition. The LTD with passives, besides presenting the same problem, was fizzier. Only the EMG guitar remained clear, tight and articulate, with no fizz. Obviusly the EMG 81 was designed for clarity and tightness under high gain. Other pups lose definition and might even produce nasty sounds in these settings. I’m not looking to replace my beloved DiMazrio set. I’m just looking for another “flavor”: a very focused set for higher gain situations.

Bare Knucles Pickups also get a lot of love everywhere. And they have many high output options.

Yes I know. You must be careful with the EQ when using a Duncan Custom.

The OP said he wants fat treble/treble rolled off, not more of it.

Ok then i misunderstood the post.

if you want rolled-off treble, i would recommend the following:

Custom Custom (medium output for that VH 80s tone)
Invader (very rolled off treble with massive bass)
Black Winter (massive mid bump )

Re: Seymour Duncan humbuckers with fat treble for Metal?.

He also wants tight so you can definitely scratch the Custom Custom off the list. Nor is he asking for a dark pickup. The Invader can likely be axed as well.
