Seymour Duncan SH-18 Whole Lotta Humbucker - Thoughts?

Have any of y'all tried the SH-18 set? I was thinking of a Les Paul style project--Mahogany body and rosewood fretboard--I've never played these and wanted to see if anyone had any experience with them. Thoughts? Thanks!

Quite a few of us now - just do it, you can thank me later...

+1

In a word: BRILLIANT!

I have a set in a Gibson Les Paul Studio and could not be happier.

Oh, and go with Zebras. They look cooler and I swear they sound better!! :headbang::bigok::lmao:

+1. Here is another "Do it!"

This pickup set has turned my year old SG has turned into my favorite guitar.

These pickups were made for mahogany and rosewood.

Best set I've found for the Les Paul tone I have in MY head.

Re: Seymour Duncan SH-18 Whole Lotta Humbucker - Thoughts?

They're damn good. I recently put a set in my LTD Viper (think SG but with a thick body). They have an unexpected rawness that screams Page to me, I didn't see it coming but I should have. Great set. I initially (accidentally) had them with 250k pots and I liked the bridge a bit better that way, but its a worthy sacrifice as the neck pup is outstanding now. I spent about 90% of practice last Friday on the neck.

I have a set in my '91 LP Classic and they are excellent for all things classic rock and blues. Slightly hotter than vintage, push the amp nicely, perfectly balanced tonally for a Les Paul.

Re: Seymour Duncan SH-18 Whole Lotta Humbucker - Thoughts?

How do they compare to other well known pickups?

I've used the bridge WLH :)
FAT! nice sort of growl to power chords, warmer than a 59b

59b leads have more sting WLH leads are smoother fuller

cleans are even without some of the clunk or spike that the 59 or Custom5 can have

59 has a little more of a woody "vintage" thang compared to WLH

WLH split sound gives a little bit of single coil spank without getting too anemic

IMO if you're after an AlnicoV sound and want more power than a 59 the WLH is a much better answer than the Custom5 or Custom/hybrid, both those pickups have weird EQ problems.

Thank you and everyone else for the comparisons and the in-depth details–looks like y'all made up my mind on the pickups for my next Les Paul project. Thanks again!

How would they sound in a Strat ?
I'm looking for a medium humbucker that will balance better with my single coils.

How would they handle 250k pots ?
I'm looking at getting Suhr's hybrid wiring done so all pickups see their ideal value but if I can find a humbucker that's happy with Strat pots, it'll save me some expense.

Hi the WLH set is one of the best set from SD , if you request a bit more then the vintage low area.
for the bridge I will ever buy one again, but I sold my set a few days ago.
the neck cd be lighter and brighter for me and as I did not want to split the set , i let them go.
for my bright sounding R9 the neck wd be still ok.
but i like the sheptones in the R9 such !
so no tinkering. yes WLHs are one a my favourite duncans for sure.
and the fan club will sure grow daily!

I have a Charvel with the HSS set up and I decided to go with a Jazz Bridge and Classic Stacks. I haven't got to put it together yet.

Watch this space...........

Re: Seymour Duncan SH-18 Whole Lotta Humbucker - Thoughts?

They sound killer in my bandmate's SG (which used to be mine). Nice and meaty, but without losing too much of the P.A.F. flavor. They'd probably not be my cup of tea in a Les Paul, though. I'd imagine them not having enough cut-through or definition in the more thumpy maple-capped body style. I'd like to try 'em in one of those newer humbucker-equipped LP Specials, though.

Im getting more excited with every post!! Due to Rodney Gene's extreme kindness, I have a set on the way to me. Gonna put em in my Blue LP. Only prob is Im gonna have to gut the circuitboard and put traditional pots and such in.
