"Seymour Duncan Special Van halen pickup 1979"

Re: "Seymour Duncan Special Van halen pickup 1979"

Gibson175 Ive been though the cranked marshall plexi variac thing and modded marshalls so-on and so-on with no cigar, many guys have tried this.I believe the missing item is the correct pickup.

The missing item is you're not a young Edward Van Halen

:fing2: Seems like this would be obvious to people but seeing how much time and effort they spend analyzing equipment vs analyzing technique makes me feel that this is the missing ingredient.

I'm willing to bet I VH could hand me his guitar and his whole rig in the same studio and I still wouldnt sound like him.

Re: "Seymour Duncan Special Van halen pickup 1979"

Here, buy a cheap plexi reissue, and send it to Rockstah.

All the brown you can handle.

Re: "Seymour Duncan Special Van halen pickup 1979"

"Van halen 1 came out in 1980".This is what I mean some guys have no idea when it come down to the different sounds from van halen from album to album.Vahalen 1 came out in 1978,recorded in 77 and released in 78.As for the fingers thing, each album sounds different so that thoughs the fingers thing out the window. Each album sounds different because of changes in Eds equipment.Van halen 1 is the most aggressive out of all his recordings. As for Rockstah amp, they do sound very good but they need alittle more of edge-gain,listen to the Van halen iso guitar(only the songs that are on van halen 1) tracks and then compare them to the Rockstah amp clips you will see what im talking about.

I hear ya dude! well since non of us know exactly what ED used i would go with the TB-5 custom or the DSD for the higher output more driving VH 1 tone and for the second album through diver down the PAF types like PG bridge or 78 are the best bet for FW and the rest get the EVH frankenstein or the dimarzio axis bridge pup

Re: "Seymour Duncan Special Van halen pickup 1979"

Steve Lynch the guitarist for the band Autograph used a Duncan Custom sh-5 pickup, listen to "Turn up the radio",on that song Steve has the Van halen tone going on.

Re: "Seymour Duncan Special Van halen pickup 1979"

People have been making money off EVH's name since he hit the scene. It's no wonder he's become a business man and entrepreneur and guards his products and identity in a highly litigious manner.

In spite of Seymour's misstep in the late 70's, obviously EVH has forgiven him, since he's had several pickups re-wound and made for him by Seymour and Co: The original "EVH" hot PAF, the hotter version (Custom?) that ended up in the retired Frankie and the replica model that is for sale, the Kramer 5150 pickup and the numerous prototypes submitted by SD for the current Wolfgang guitar. A very large part of Eddie's tone was aided by Seymourized pickups, so I'd probably stick with them if you want the nuances or play in a VH tribute band. The Music Man/Wolfgang era is a different story, but it's interesting that Ed has gone to 14k + ceramic bridge pickups in his last few guitars, in lieu of his old preference for PAF's. It could very well be true that the original record was produced with a similar hot ceramic pup and in that respect, Ed's come full circle.

Allegedly since the "wood" Plexi (his second favorite) and the Holy Grail have been restored to "original spec", they may have been used on the new record, in addition to the 50w 5150III prototype. The tolex-less Plexi is seen here right above the 5150III

Additionally, Eddie admitted he still plays and uses the original Frankie in the Studio (but refuses to let it leave the facility because its theft value is HUGE.) With the reunion with Roth and the admission that Ed's been listening to old, unreleased "club days" tunes for inspiration, we might get to hear that magical combination again.

VH-1 was a Super70 A8 Ibanez Sen wood destroyer for the non tremolo parts of the album, and a Boogie body hard Ash Franken strat with a Fender 50's tremolo and Mighty Mite Screamer pickup.
Yes, we want to know the pickup. Its huge in the scheme of things ..don't underestimate the power of the pickup in the right guitar to really get in the ballpark of the old VH-1 sound, notwithstanding the amp.
That said, I have a hard Ash Strat with a Duncan '78 and it gets as close as I wanna be.

These days Ed could do a video interview and tell ya what he used gear wise on that first VH record and still no one would believe him.

trouble is most guys , including myself think Ed was changing stuff around so much that even HE doesnt know what it was..and he's also very jealous and guarded of his sound, so its not likely he'd say even if he knew. thats why we have to figure it out.
As far as Eddie rewinding his pickups?.. gimme a break, the dude couldn't even figure out how to wire his humbucking Strat pickup up in his guitar.

Re: "Seymour Duncan Special Van halen pickup 1979"

Yeah, he didn't wind squat. He might have UNWOUND a pickup and went, "Holy @#$%!, this will take forever, I need to go talk to that Seymour dude" and the rest was history. Likely, he DIDN'T mention Seymour in interviews and gave the BS line about rewinding pickups because he was still burnt from the attempt to sell pickups in his name.

I have repeatedly said YES the custom sh5 or TB5 is great for the VH1 tone?
