hmm...Simon i agree with you on most points
but i find that my plexitone through my clean laney actually compresses and adds more gain to the already overdriven sound, (in addition to boosting the volume, which you already mentioned)
however, as Jeff said, matching the volume of the clean sound, overdrive, and overdrive with boost, is very tricky, and most of the time impossible..
i actually don't have the crunch setting nor the boost setting very high.
the crunch is a little over halfway, and the boost is less than halfway..
i don't know the exact definition of syrupy but it sure gives me plenty of gain for leads..

I am not sure I would se it as a really strong marshall tone myself. IT is smoother to me. More Mark IIIc like in voicing on the second channel. But, my ears are not always very good.
