I'll admit I had to think about the P90 for half a second.
But, damn! I didn't even know Josh Hartnett played!
Wow. Way to kill a thread about a new product, guys, by *****ing about the naming, the marketing and the intellect of the general guitar playing public. Rather than discussing the pickup itself, you go in to negative mode. Real nice.

Then call it the Monterey :scratchch
Why? Did Stephen Stills of Buffalo Springfield play a Strat at Monterey?![]()
I'm with AniML. We know what it means, but most people won't and will just stick with the JB because everyone knows what that is.
In the most basic sense a hybrid is a pairing of unlike things, like a poodle and a cocker spaniel. In today's marketing world say the word and most will automatically assume a highly efficient vehicle at the expense of power.
Hybrid of what?
Should be a name that alludes to retro-modern, not to a green planet and energy conservation, unless of course they are marketing this to the hipster-indie crowd
What are you talking about? It is called the 59/Custom Hybrid. Couldn't be any more ****ing clear. Not only is it a hybrid, but it lists exactly what it is a hybrid of.
Understandable for you and 10 or 20 other people here who would like to try one and have the same reservations. Are you going to buy a new one for $90 (maybe more?) or one from the trading post for $50?
But pretend you don't come here and you go to your local GC to buy a new pickup for blues and classic rock and they have the Jazz, JB, Screamin Demon, Custom, Custom 5, Custom Custom and Hybrid. 59 is out of stock (one of the few properly named HBs along with the Pearly Gates IMO) Which are you going to buy?
Oh and as a total aside, I didn't particularly care for the hybrid. I don't particularly care for the 59 or custom line either. I found the 59 too dull (maybe a lemon?) and the customs too compressed. But I absolutely love the PG and Demon. I am eventually going to pair these up in a hybrid, just looking for a cheapo PG
Cool but... another SD pickup with an unfortunately confusing name. Sure those of us here know what a C/59 hybrid is but > 90% of guitarists don't. Naming is / has been a weakness of SD. Most notably the Jazz and Screamin Demon come to mind, along with the JB/Jazz set as the "Hot rodded humbucker".
I am more or less responsbile for kicking off this naming discussion. I wasn't being negative at all.
Hybrid like, Custom tells me nothing except that it is non-standard. To many people that is a turn off. In 2012 Hybrid = save power. Is that what you want in a pickup? And until you know that in SD parlance, "custom" means somewhere between vintage and hot, custom means expensive or MacGuyvered.
I was pointing out that SD as a brand has a huge following, but the general public cannot easily differentiate between many of the poorly named products... unless their marketing strategy is to confuse the public and have them churn through ill-named pickups until they find the right one, but I don't think so
If you wanna make an old man cry, make the Custom 8 a production model too!
Maybe if they had called it the "BachToRock Bucker" or "BTR Bucker"!wonder IF bachtorock is getting any royalties from duncan for this model?:scratchch
