Seymour launches the 59/Custom Hybrid!

Re: Seymour launches the 59/Custom Hybrid!

I know a lot of you guys are saying this is a great pickup for any guitar, but what about a fairly bright maple through alder superstrat? I was looking at getting a CC for this particular guitar since it's pretty bright, but this pickup looks very cool and I'd like to try it. The only problem I'm seeing is this 59/Custom pickup might not be warm enough to tame the high end?

Pop an A2 magnet in it.

Re: Seymour launches the 59/Custom Hybrid!

The JB is wonderful with 250K pots in my Alder, Maple neck Silhouette Special.

I wonder if this hybrid will be the same ??

I'd love a slightly lower output pickup in that guitar because all my others have medium output humbuckers ( 10k range )

Re: Seymour launches the 59/Custom Hybrid!

Hi everyone, Cathy here. We just finished the fun but exhausting NAMM show out in Anaheim. We were reading the comments on the naming of this new pickup and Aldo the recognition of Backtorock. Naming products has just about always been a joint dialog with many of the great people we have here (our new products team, Frank and Derek, Evan, Joe Gore, All three scotts and more. Like lots of things in life, sometimes they come easily and brilliantly and other times, well it's just a struggle.

I agree with many of the posts that some have been spot on, some confusing
and many just plain boring. But since i got the really fun job of heading marketing since last March, the final decision is mine, and I wanted a name
that recognized the tremendous contribution of the forum members, yet was
clear. I and others thought that the more traditional name on the forum ,
custom/59, might make non forum members think this was some form of a
true custom pickup as in something coming out of the Custom Shop and higher priced.

Frank, Derek, Kevin Beller and others here have some other "hybrids" they
have been playing with , just as many on the forum have been doing so for a
long time. So in the rush week and half before NAMM, Hybrid seemed to be
the admittedly non glamorous name that would explain the concept of taking 2
distinct hb coils and putting them together. If you all have better ideas, shoot
them out. I don't mind admitting errors and shifting.

Lastly I firmly believe in and like to give recognition to creative, passionate
and energetic people. Seems Bachtorock is one. I will check with Frank here
see if there are others. I am sure we can save our first 00001, and 2 and 3
or more signed by us to says thanks.

Thanks everyone for your comments , it's one of the important ways we get better

Re: Seymour launches the 59/Custom Hybrid!

Cathy, thanks for taking the time to reach out here. What a great gesture to give one to BtR.

Re: Seymour launches the 59/Custom Hybrid!

I think the name is great. Humans have been Hybridizing for millenia. ;)

Hybrid vigor, or outbreeding enhancement, is the improved or increased function of any biological quality in a hybrid offspring.

the occurrence of a superior offspring from mixing the genetic contributions of its parents.

Re: Seymour launches the 59/Custom Hybrid!

hy·brid/ˈhīˌbrid/
Noun: A thing made by combining two different elements; a mixture.
Adjective: Of mixed character; composed of mixed parts.

I like the name. It suits exactly what it is.

Re: Seymour launches the 59/Custom Hybrid!

I think that the name in the ad is appropriate. First time I entered the forum and took a look at the board, reading the sticky thread I immediately understood what it was about.
It's a fact someone who enter a music shop doesn't know exactly what it could be about, here we are somewhat trained on the spot.
For example, "Duncan distortion" doesn't need any integrative info, this one should need some more.
Maybe adding a few adjective about the scope of the pickup to the name on the box could be interesting.
I don't know, something like "Custom/59 Hybrid (a dynamic rock touch)" or some silly thing like that could help the average customer in choosing the right thing out of the bunch.

Re: Seymour launches the 59/Custom Hybrid!

How about a simple name like the 59C

What's with all this name nonsense? The description alone should sell it.

It's not like they called it the "poop bucker" because it does the "brown sound" so well.

Re: Seymour launches the 59/Custom Hybrid!

@Cathy: I'm sure you know that the key to a great marketing concept is to arouse emotions. When I hear 59/Custom Hybrid I instantly think of some kind of a machine. The key is to describe what it DOES rather than what it IS. I have no experience with this pickup yet so I can't really make a proper suggestion. Perhaps you should ask the people who have already played it about the FEELINGS/EMOTIONS they associate with this pickup and then settle on a name that arouses the same emotions when it is heard.

I hope that helped you in any way.

Kind regards,

Chuck

Re: Seymour launches the 59/Custom Hybrid!

I'm glad to see they are going down this path but am also curious how it gets around the DiMarzio patent (see Tone Zone).

Pretty sure DiMarzio's patent is limited to coils with the same number of turns but different sizes of wire. That would result in different Qs for the coils, but similar output.

These coils use (I assume) different wire size, but also different numbers of turns.

Gibson BBs use different turns numbers too (same wire size though), and there's no patent issue there.

Also pretty sure the patent has expired...surely it's past 17 years now.

This thread needs pics.

Left : 59/Jazz (aged A5).
Right : Custom/59 double screw, (aged A5). This one is a Duncan Floor Shop Custom and came from a forum bro.
