SG Lovers Only: Your Perfect SG

Re: SG Lovers Only: Your Perfect SG

They don't have a wraparound....at least not that I recall.

No, my original guitar I had up was the wraparound, the classic has the std. Gibson style.

Another difference I just thought of would be the pickguard as well.

Re: SG Lovers Only: Your Perfect SG

zerb, have i told you i love you recently?

my perfect sg is a nice aged cherry finish, small pickguard, fat neck with long tenon, stop bar/abr bridge, nickel hardware... well basically a '61 sg with a fat neck, bigger tenon, and pgn/brobucker combo. or a couple p90's would be cool too.

What's the advantage of the long tenon? More sustain? Stronger joint?

Re: SG Lovers Only: Your Perfect SG

Let's say you had unlimited cash to build the SG of your dreams. What would it be like? Provide as many specs as possible, along with the kind of music you'd be playing on it. Also, take a guess as to how much it would actually cost to purchase such an SG.

- Keith

P90 Neck pickup (soapbar), aged black

Pearly Gates bridge pickup, aged nickel

Bigsby B5 Tremolo, aged nickel

Walnut finish on a mahogany body, of course

Dark, dark rosewood fretboard with trapezoid inlays

Satin / relic style back-o-the-neck treatment

3 way switch, master volume, master tone - simple

<3

Music: pop rhythm on the 'bucker and the white blues on the P90

How much does it cost? I want it to cost $699, but I know that's not the way that goes.

I have both small & big pickguards (angel wing & bat wing), and don't hear a noticeable difference in tone, but angel wings are much easier to swap PU's and magnets in.

Jeremy, you're going to embarass Zerb. What's next, sending him a box of chocolates? I never pictured him as the warm, fuzzy type.

Re: SG Lovers Only: Your Perfect SG

i know the pickguard type doesnt really change the sound but i prefer the look.

i dont really picture zerb as a warm fuzzy type either, actually i picture him like himself. he has posted pics and doesnt look warm, a little fuzzy maybe. i will send him no chocolates but i may buy him a beer if he is still in germany when i go next year for the 200th anniversary of octoberfest

In theory: a stronger joint and better coupling between the neck and body due to the larger surface area = more resonant guitar = more sustain.

In practice, the way Gibson´s run of the mill glue joints are designed and have always been executed: effectively zero. On a guitar with supertight tolerances possibly noticable.

Re: SG Lovers Only: Your Perfect SG

I not so sure that the pickguard is neutral.

Mounting the pickups in a pickguard will have them move much more relative to the body. In particular if the pickguard is concave (doesn't get pressed again the body in the middle of the guard like a convex guard would).

Remember that any pickup movement relative to the body is the same thing as a moving string. You could have the strings be stone dead sitting there and making music from moving the pickup at the right frequencies.

thats why i want the bigger tenon and also why i wouldnt want gibson to build the thing.

Re: SG Lovers Only: Your Perfect SG

After playing some last night, I'm changing my answer.

My perfect SG would be the one in Andrew Lamprecht's avatar.

I don't know why you'd go with a long tenon on the '61 neck joint rather than the newer neck joint on the Standards. The newer neck joint has the neck meeting the body at a lower fret, so if we're going to be picky about a long tenon it makes no sense to leave out the new neck joint.

Re: SG Lovers Only: Your Perfect SG

Here are some mp3 sound clips of "Alice" by faded cherry 04' Gibson SG Special. I installed new wiring with 2 push pulls (large Alphas) and they do out of phase, series and series out of phase (my favorite). She isn't the prettiest girl on the block, but she has killer Tone and a nice ebony fret board, Clips were made with stock 490's 500K CTS pots and .01 vitamin Q's. She is my perfect sounding SG IMHO ;)

I liked the old-style Supremes with the "centered" burst a lot better... but there was one with an orange/yellow sunburst and two P-90s... wow.

Anyway, for me I think a dark cherry finish, large BWB pickguard, 60s neck, trapezoid inlays, Nickel-covered S-Deco set, green-tulip tuners.

Re: SG Lovers Only: Your Perfect SG

I'd have to have two: Both mahogany body & neck, rosewood fretboard, one with buckers and one with P-90s. Actually, when I get those, a Hot Rod Tele and an ES-335 or 175 I won't need more guitars.
